The Epson Expression Photo XP-970 Small-in-One ($299.99), a consumer-grade wide-format photo printer and flagship of the Japanese printer giant's popular Small-in-One line, replaces the XP-960 reviewed here nearly four years ago. Like its direct competitor, the Editors' Choice Canon Pixma TS9520 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One, the XP-970 is capable of printing wide or tabloid-size (11 by 17 inches) pages. Both machines are excellent oversize photo-oriented family and home-based office AIOs, but, compared with the Canon, the Epson has a few limitations, such as the inability to hold more than one wide-format sheet of paper at a time. Even so, as wide-format photo AIOs go, the XP-970 is a relatively capable choice, especially if you need to print borderless images and documents up to tabloid size.
