Elden Ring review

Elden Ring shines as an absorbing, challenging adventure that allows FromSoftware to showcase its creativity like never before. All while telling a captivating story.

Outrageously rich open world; Combat to die for; Endlessly inventive;

Difficult to learn; Performances issues; Unhelpful players

Souls Amalgamated

I'm a FromSoft fan, so take with a grain of salt. However, this might be the best game I've ever played. I don't say that lightly. Since it came out, Bloodborne held that title. Elden Ring has taken every lesson from previous games in the series and compiled them into an excellent, open-world experience. I've put just over 30 hours into this game and I still have so much to discover. I have beaten 4 of the main story bosses and a heap of the optional ones. What I love about Elden Ring is, every time I load up the game, I discover new things. The map mightn't be on the scale of an Assassin's Creed game or Horizon Forbidden West, but all the item and enemy placement is so purposeful that I'm never bored and forever finding new places to explore. A week before Elden came out, I played around 7 hours of Horizon Forbidden West, and as beautiful as it's world is, I don't think I'll ever return. The bloated map, filled with objective markers, fetch quests, boring characters, repetitive combat scenarios, etc. I've had enough. The open-world, sandbox game has been redefined by Elden Ring. This is a masterclass in how to do things correctly. I'm not going to mention the combat, as it's what you'd expect FromSoft to do. It's safe to say, I'm going to get 100s of hours out of this game, and not a moment of it will be dull. Get with it AAA. Miyazaki, you've done it again.

Truly Magnificent

In an age of over-hype and disappointing AAA releases, this game is a master-class in delivering the goods. Spectacular open world, tight combat, overwhelming build choice, fascinating story and beautifully grotesque art design. If you’ve been struggling to get into the “Soulsborne” series this is a brilliant starting point!

Good game

Game is very good but all the collectible stuff that came in the box wasn't great. Would of been nice if there was a standard edition without that stuff. Game certainly lives up to the challenging dark souls type which great.

Game of the year?

Excellent game that combines Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Zelda Breath of the Wild and The Witcher 3. Definitely a game of the year contender.

Dream Team!

Miyazaki & Martin are a dream team! Playing Elden Ring is like walking through Martin's brain XD – the uniqueness of the landscapes & enemies is jaw-dropping. Every 5 minutes I'm “ohh-ing & ahh-ing” at the incredible sights! Miyazaki & FromSoft have done it again…expected no less, of course. Dark Souls may hold my heart & is very special to me, but by the Gods, Elden Ring is just above & beyond everything I expected…& I expected A LOT!!! Love the combat, incorporated mechanics from Sekiro (jump attacks are fantastic & the sneak), the world-building is astounding, the story…WOW!!! I'm in love :-) I'm only mid-game & already clocked over 100 hours just because I'm OCD & want to see as much as I possibly can…after all, we only get ONE first playthrough. Elden Ring is utterly superb game experience…it's my GoTY for sure & I'll be replaying this for many years to come.

Elden Ring review: Even the haters will be impressed

If you have strong feelings about FromSoftware’s games either way, you probably already know what you’ll think of Elden Ring. If you’re a Dark Souls veteran, there’s a fair chance that this takes the throne as your favorite game of all time. For haters who find Souls games tedious and punishing, the praise will sound like a cruel joke. Both sides will have a point. There’s a good reason that Souls games are so polarizing, and Elden Ring brings the divide into focus. On one hand, it’s an astonishing achievement. The action RPG is frequently mesmerizing, offering the hands down best open-world experience since, you guessed it, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But to give the detractors their due, it’s also a game that demands perfection from players while refusing to clean up the series’ sloppiest quirks. Don’t let that last part scare you off, though. Despite its lack of finesse, Elden Ring is an all-enveloping adventure filled with incredible landscapes, fantastic enemy design,...

Deep combat customization; Excellent bosses; Top-tier open world; Rewarding exploration; Dazzling art design;

Rough camera; Frustrating tech quirks; Disappointing horseback combat;
