Dark Souls 2 Review – Part 1 (PS3)

The sequel to From Software's ball-breakingly difficult Dark Souls and Demon's Souls has finally arrived, but Dark Souls 2 won't just break your balls. It'll crush them into a fine powder.

Vast world to explore; Deep character customisation; Looks and sounds beautiful; New Game + makes a lot of changes; Difficult like slowly chiseling into the pleasure center of your brain

Framerate suffers during hectic scenes; Loading times can occasionally cause delayed button inputs and sound effects

Prepare to Die Again | Dark Souls 2 Review

The time has come for the cult favorite Dark Souls to receive a sequel and this time the developers promise not to make it easy. Then again, the game was never easy to begin with, yet that is part of the reason why so many RPG fans love the Dark Souls franchise.

Excellent Combat; Crushingly Difficult

Harsh Death Penalties

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Review

Dark Souls , like Demon's Souls before it, defies so many gaming sensibilities that either game's catastrophic failure would not be surprising. However, the truly unique blend of play mechanics and design philosophies have come together two times now in logic-defying synchronicity to create a pair...

Incredible depth of play; Fierce challenge that isn't cheap; Learning the game world; then building a character; equipment loads; and skills around that knowledge

Technical hiccups like throttled resolution and frame rate; Poor PC controls essentially require purchase of a USB controller

Dark Souls review

Demon's Souls was an anomaly, a thoroughly modern 3D game whose mechanics and philosophy were plucked wholesale from the 8-bit era: unforgivingly brutal difficulty, a focus on repetitive attack patterns, and absolutely no hand-holding whatsoever.

Enormous level of content; Unparalleled sense of accomplishment; Bizarre character and level design

"Gotcha!" ambushes; Unreliable target lock-on/camera; Framerate issues

Dark Souls Review

Dark Souls should need little introduction. Even if you somehow managed to miss out on From Software's stellar spiritual predecessor, Demon's Souls , you probably did not escape having your gaming mettle questioned by Dark Souls' "Prepare to Die" marketing campaign over the past few months.

Pure gameplay without many frills; An extremely satisfying single player campaign augmented by the most unique use of coop and competitive multiplayer around

Excellent art and sound design marred by occasional but potentially game-breaking  frame rate and clipping issues

Dark Souls 2

An interesting question came up the other day while talking about dualism and the mind body problem, the idea that the brain isn't all you need to create the human experience: as videogame characters are controlled by external entities with consciousness, does this mean that these characters too...

Dark Souls 2 (PS3) - Review

It seems fitting that as the new generation of consoles gets underway one of the swan songs of the last/"current" generation is Dark Souls 2 . Dark Souls and its spiritual predecessor Demon's Souls together comprise one of the best new franchises to come out of the seventh generation of consoles.

Dark Souls Review

Dark Souls flies in the face of recent videogame conventions. Where most games these days pride themselves on accessibility, Dark Souls goes to great lengths to make its complex systems impenetrable. Gone is the obligatory lengthy tutorial intrinsic to most action/RPGs.

Gorgeous world to explore; Stellar combat system; Many secrets to discover; Online integration for community generated hints; co-op; and competitive multiplayer

Framerate is inconsistent; Persnickety lock-on

Dark Souls

First, allow me to begin with a caveat; I have not completed Dark Souls . I have invested over 90 hours of play into the game, exploring the vast majority of its world and facing off against (if not defeating) many of the boss enemies.

Kevin VanOrd braves life and death to bring you a video review of Dark Souls.

A gorgeous and frightening world you won't want to leave; Abundant; amazing bosses test your skill and determination; Superb combat in which every attack feels powerful and precise; Fantastic online aspect lets players both cooperate and compete; Covenant system and other features lead to constant...

Frame rate gets choppy in certain areas; Finicky target lock
