D-Link DSM-380 Boxee Box HD Media Player

Plays lots of video formats, interface is pretty slick Rapidly forward only does 30 seconds at time. Iow, unusable.Couldn't even login on initial power on, had to flash firmware for that (networking was working but the software thought it wasn't.

  • Good build quality
  • Great remote
  • Lots of features
Cons:
  • Glitchy and fiddly

All other connections are on the back side and I really like the options that Boxee provides. Starting off, you have an HDMI port which will be the primary source of connection to your TV for almost everyone.

Boxee Box Review

Feeling stifled by the narrow scope set-top boxes like Apple TV, but not quite ready to start stuffing circuits into a box to build your own home theater PC? D-Link pushes forth an unlikely solution with the funky and curiously geometric Boxee Box, which promises the control and flexibility of a desktop program packed into a standalone box. While it somehow manages to fall a little short of both, plenty of digital entertainment gurus will still find plenty to like in its imperfect middle ground. Boxee is no more unique to the Boxee Box than Windows is to your Dell laptop. It’s just software, and Boxee has actually been distributing it for free on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X since 2008. A cult following ensued and D-Link picked it up for the Boxee Box in 2010, the first set-top box to use the software Boxee had been vetting on the desktop for years. Boxee’s basic goal is to play everything. Locally, that means everything from common DivX files to the rare and mysterious VOB (the only th...
Pros:
  • Near-perfect remote
  • Unique design
  • Sleek, intuitive interface
  • SD card reader and dual USB ports
  • Wide variety of online content
  • Plays almost any file
Cons:
  • Design doesn’t fit standard home theater aesthetic
  • Mousing often required for Web content
  • Frequent crashes, glitches
  • No video outputs for older TVs
  • Still missing Amazon VOD, Hulu Plus

Boxee Box by D-Link review

The Boxee Box is somewhat like the Apple TV in that it lacks any onboard storage. However, it does have the distinct advantage of having two USB ports, so you can add external storage to the device should the need arise. As well as the USB ports there's an Ethernet connection and built-in WiFi.
Pros:
  • Fantastic online services
  • great user interface
  • decent remote control
  • option to add local storage
Cons:
  • Not many movies yet
  • minor bugs, like sites not showing full-screen video
