The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS ($279.99 direct) is a pocket-size camera with a long 20x zoom lens. It packs a wealth of features into its svelte frame, including Wi-Fi and GPS. Images from the 12-megapixel CMOS sensor are sharp, although some details are smudged away at very high ISO settings.
Sharp lens; 20x zoom range; Speedy performer; GPS; Wi-Fi; 1080p60 video capture
Narrow aperture; Smudged details at high ISOs; Not the sharpest LCD
The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS is a 12 Megapixel pocket super-zoom with a 20x optical range and built-in Wifi and GPS. Announced in March 2013 it's the successor to the popular SX260 HS and like that model it's available in two versions.
Slightly superior image quality to peer group; but not by much; Broad 20x optical zoom covers every situation in pocket body; 1080p video with zooming; stereo sound and continuous AF; Built-in GPS and Wifi; Fast continuous shooting up to 14fps albeit for only seven frames
No touch-screen nor the ability to move the single AF area mode, No remote control over Wifi, only image transfer, Convoluted quality selection for miniature videos, No HD for slow motion video, Can't recharge battery over USB; Need to use mains charger
Canon PowerShot SX280HS Review - The Canon PowerShot SX280HS is a long-zoom travel compact featuring a 20x optical zoom, GPS technology and the addition of Wi-fi connectivity
Low image noise; Wi-fi Transfer features; Image quality and colour; Compact design; High Speed 14fps continuous shooting; Build quality
14fps is only achievable when in special High Speed mode; Auto pop up flash positioning; Disappointing battery life
Canon's PowerShot SX280 is one of the most versatile of the compact point-n-shoot models in the PowerShot lineup. Sporting a 20x optical zoom lens, 12.1-Megapixel HS CMOS imaging sensor and the new DIGIC VI processor, its power and image quality are just as impressive.
Auto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations; Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record; Image Quality is excellent in all shooting modes; Movie quality is better than most digicams; Intelligent IS keeps images sharp in low-light; Nice; Bright 3.0-inch LCD; Decent...
Small; weak flash unit isn't very helpful unless you are very close to subject; Slightly more noise than expected; even at the lower ISO settings; Poor battery life; Special features (Wi-Fi and GPS) shorten the already anemic battery life
It would also be a good camera for anybody looking to learn a little more about photography, since you could start on the fully automatic settings and work your way through the manual options.
The Canon Powershot SX280 HS , ( buy from Amazon ) ( review ) is something of a mixed bag. It scores high marks for the wide zoom range (25-500mm), small size, built in WiFi and GPS , extensive user manual controls and generally good image quality.
I bought this camera to replace my other older Cannon that quit working on my first day of vacation. The Zoom is very powerful if that is what you need. And the pictures are very good quality in the full auto mode.
Good Low-Light Performance; excellent image quality; Bright LCD; easy to use
Short battery life; Complicated controls/menu
The super zoom I fantastic. Took pictures of the last full moon that look professional. Also took picture of rare bald eagle in distant tree that had incredible detail. All on "Auto" setting. Like all canons I have bought I can look over exposed in daylight when set to auto.
at full zoom qaulity is hard to beleieve has very nice feel others felt cheap and flimsy
menus can be hard to use to adjust settings; keep gps off to save battery turn on only if need pop up flash is in the dumbest location
I was looking for a compact camera that takes great picture, is easy to use outside, and had a good zoom to use when I don't want to carry my DSL and lenses. This camera isn't the one.
Picture quality; easy.
Limited zoom; slow to focus in zoom; hard to see in sunlight
