Canon Powershot S95 Review

At first the Canon PowerShot S95 seems to be just another point-and-shooter: compact, all black and stylish. Then a quick glance over the specs and external controls leads you to think otherwise.

Canon PowerShot S95 review

Many compact cameras aimed at the more serious user are, well, not quite so compact. Canon's PowerShot G11 is 49mm in depth, and Samsung's EX1 is 46mm. In contrast, the Canon PowerShot S95 slips easily into the pocket and is truly compact at less than 30mm deep, while offering many of the same...

"The image results we got from the S95 simply don't compare to the sharp, crisp and altogether rich quality of shots we got from the Nikon P7000." Hey, don't leave us hanging! More detail on comparison to P7000 needed. Can P7000 handle extreme contrast modes as well as S95 HDR mode?
Pros:
  • HDR mode - potentially a must-have feature
  • but need to see actual results
Cons:
  • Maybe inability to enlarge photos beyond 8 x 10"

Canon PowerShot S95 review Review

The Canon PowerShot S95 is a high-performance snapshot camera that doesn't claim to be an alternative to a dSLR, but costs almost as much. You're paying for a smaller form factor, solid feature set and equally solid build.
Pros:
  • Increased functionality from a smaller form factor
  • Rock-solid build
  • Adjustable function ring speeds operation
  • Intuitive usability
Cons:
  • Pricey for a pocket compact
  • Lack of anything approaching a handgrip
  • Optical zoom disabled in movie mode
