Still pointing and shooting

It seems like only a year ago we were telling you about the Canon Powershot S100 - wait, it WAS a year ago, almost to the day. Canon PowerShot S110 review

We'll get the bad stuff out the way first: the Wi-Fi is poorly implemented, battery life really isn't up to scratch and, just like its predecessor, there's still no hotshoe or accessory port. In fact the S110 isn't wildly different from its predecessor at all.
Pros:
  • Touchscreen with movable focus point
  • great pictures straight from camera
  • faster autofocus than predecessor
  • truly pocketable
Cons:
  • Wi-Fi implementation is poor
  • pricey
  • no hotshoe for accessory expansion
  • poor battery life - 200 shots per charge is worsened by Wi-Fi and GPS
  • competition is strong
  • little new compared to predecessor

Canon PowerShot S110

The S100 was a sleek little expert compact that was well received by critics. Updating it was therefore always going to be a delicate matter for Canon.
Pros:
  • Impeccable build quality
  • Great design and handling: lens ring
  • settings wheel
  • touchscreen
  • Onboard Wi-Fi for image transfer
  • Picture quality up to 800
  • or even 1600 ISO
  • Manual mode
  • RAW mode
Cons:
  • Corners of shots aren't as sharp at wide-angle
  • heavy distortion in RAW mode
  • Aperture drops quickly-just f/5.9 at telephoto
  • Access to websites can't be configured directly in the camera
  • Limited battery life

  • You require high resolution and low noise levels at high ISO
Cons:
  • You have large hands or fingers or limited dexterity, You need fast cycle times for processing shots, You need a powerful flash
  • Don't buy this camera if, You have large hands or fingers or limited dexterity, You need fast cycle times for processing shots, You need a powerful flash

The Canon S110 is the most refined little pocket camera Canon has ever made. The core design of the S110 remains unchanged from previous iterations. But with a little streamlining and some key new features, it's inched one step closer to perfection.

The Canon PowerShot S110 is the latest revision of the company's premier high-end compact camera model.

Since 2009's S90, Canon's S-series cameras have been perennial favorites for shoppers looking to get good image quality in a pocketable form factor. With so much success, perhaps it's understandable that Canon hasn't changed the formula much in the past three years.

Canon PowerShot S110 First Impressions Review

Canon's PowerShot S-series was involved in a bit of a coup this year. More accurately, it was the victim of one. In 2011 and the early part of 2012, the S95 and later the S100 were the go-to recommendations for enthusiasts or pros looking for a fixed-lens, pocket-sized companion camera-and for...
Pros:
  • Should perform a little better than the S100
  • Improved autofocus system
Cons:
  • Still won't compete with the RX100
  • Missing ergonomic features
