Canon PowerShot S100

There's not much the S100 can't do. We love the picture quality, the small size, that front lens ring with customisable shooting modes and the GPS technology. FlexiZone AF and the new grip also right the S95's wrongs.
Pros:
  • Great pictures
  • biggest zoom in category
  • more control than S95
Cons:
  • Poor close-focusing
  • very expensive
  • no hotshoe for viewfinder or extra flash
  • 200 shots per charge

Review: Canon PowerShot S100

A couple of years ago, I wrote just about the most rave review of my career - a love letter to Canon's then-new S90 point-and-shoot camera. What did I say? "The S90 is the best compact camera I've ever used.
Pros:
  • All the stuff that made its predecessors great, with some nice new features like GPS and full HD video
  • CMOS sensor uses tech from Canon's DSLR line
Cons:
  • More camera than many need
  • and perhaps less than pros would demand. Dedicated movie button on backside eliminates one photo control

For photographers who like to take control over their cameras the S100 provides a near DSLR-like level of manual control in an easily pocketable 'take-anywhere' camera.
Pros:
  • Very good image quality
  • especially at low ISO settings
  • Well optimized JPEGs
  • low contrast detail is well-preserved at low ISO settings
  • Automatic fringing/CA correction in JPEGs
  • Fast operation
  • Bright LCD screen is easy to see in daylight
  • Exposure simulation in live-view and accurate live...
Cons:
  • Manual focus preview resolution is too low to be useful
  • Lack of in-camera alignment of HDR images makes it a much less useful feature than it could be
  • Auto ISO is limited to 1600 (wasting two stops of extra ISO sensitivity
  • Pop-up flash can be blocked by your finger
