Canon PowerShot G12
Canon's PowerShot G12 can be seen as a minor or major upgrade to its predecessor, the G11 , depending on how much you want HD video capabilities. The new model arrives at $100 less than the launch price of its predecessor yet adds a 720p HD movie mode with stereo audio.

Canon PowerShot G12
As long as you're happy paying a premium for the Canon name, the G12 is an excellent do-almost-anything camera. Its main weakness is that it's almost identical to the earlier G11 model.
Pros:
- Great video quality
- Articulating LCD screen
- Excellent image quality
Cons:
- Screen is not colour accurate
- No real improvements over the G11 apart from HD video
- No external mic input
- Expensive compared to competition

Canon PowerShot G12 review
Like buses, you can wait ages for a top-end compact camera and then four come along at once. In the past few months we have reviewed the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 (AP 25 September), Samsung EX1 (AP 7 August) and the Nikon Coolpix P7000 (AP 16 October).

Canon PowerShot G12
The core specification hasn't changed since the G11, but a selection of minor upgrades address some of the issues facing the earlier model, while others take inspiration from the best of the competition, most notably its major rival from Panasonic.
Pros:
- 5x zoom with 28mm wide and 1cm macro
- Flash hotshoe
- RAW files and full manual controls
- Great quality 2.8in / 460k articulated screen
- Superb controls
- build and ergonomics
Cons:
- Slow continuous shooting at full resolution
- Can't optically zoom while filming
- Lumix LX5 and PowerShot S95 compelling alternatives
- No longer smaller than a camera with a DSLR sensor
