Review: Canon G12

If you're looking for a high performance camera with great image quality, you should get a digital SLR, right? Well yes, DSLRs are top-drawer picture-takers. But they're bulky and they weigh a ton.
Pros:
  • Tank-like build feels like it can take a pounding
  • Tons of external controls on the camera body will bring out the pro in you
  • Locking down the resolution at 10 MP means it's a better performer in low light
  • Very good 720p HD capture with stereo sound.
Cons:
  • Even lower-priced competing models offer higher-resolution 1080p HD video capture
  • Only digital zooming during video capture degrades quality
  • Imaging sensor is still tiny, though other advanced compacts have gone big
  • Antiquated menu system

Good camera, with conditions...

If you switch to the P mode you can still use it like it's in auto mode, but you can change the settings like you want. You need to set the iso change speed to slow, so it will try not to raise the iso setting, and I set the max iso setting to 400. If It would let me I would set it to 200.
Pros:
  • The camera has a good textured feel, though the controls are a little crowded, the lcd screen is excellent, and the battery life is ok
  • I do not find it sluggish at all, in fact, it seems very snappy to me
  • It is capable of taking excellent pictures if you are willing to adjust some settings first.
Cons:
  • However, for an out of the box point and shoot, I am very dissapointed in the full auto mode
  • You will need to adjust some things to get good pics in most cases
  • It wants to raise the iso setting instead of using the flash in indoor settings, which results in a very noisy picture.

Canon PowerShot G12 Review

Quote from the review: "Ferraris get updated every few years. And so do Canon's "G" series point-and-shoot cameras. Last year we tested the G11 and liked it a lot, but it still had some drawbacks, notably the lack of high-def video recording.

Canon PowerShot G12

Just a few years ago, the PowerShot G12's predecessors were the cat's meow-Canon's point-and-shoot G Series cameras looked and felt like digital SLRs, with manual controls and optical viewfinders packed into smaller-than-D-SLR bodies.
Pros:
  • Very good image quality for a compact camera
  • Optical viewfinder
  • Manual controls
  • Articulating LCD
Cons:
  • Pricey
  • Bulky
  • Small sensor for such a big camera

Pros:
  • Excellent image quality
  • Good high ISO performance
  • Sharp lens
Cons:
  • Cost
  • Size and weight
  • No video AF

Awesome.

Good, solid build that you expect from Canon. Many of the more frequently used parameters can be adjusted using the dials on top of the camera. Swivel viewfinder lets you hold the camera over your head and tilt the viewfinder down.

Canon Power-Shot G12 Compact Camera

My wife gifted me this camera on my birthday and it was a good choice. I am not a professional photographer, but wanted a camera which is slightly above the average point and shoot camera . The price in India when we bought (around a year back) is around 28K INR.

Canon PowerShot G12 Review

While not without flaws such as the AF responsiveness which is a little problematic in an otherwise eminently capable camera. The G12 is not cheap either but the camera's creativity and versatility are key and make the G12 – and the G-series cameras as a whole – ideal as pro's back up or an...

  • excellent feature set
