Out of the box the G12 is a very capable camera for the advanced amateur or professional photographer looking for a piggyback camera to add to their bag of tricks and take into the field.
Pros:
- Size Size Size
- the size of the camera makes it fit well into a small case logic case on the hip belt of a backpack for fast access on the trail while riding or hiking
- and for more protection into a small pelican case inside a camelback or backpack without sacrificing room for essential gear needed...
Cons:
- in video mode the controls were primitive at best and there was no optical zoom during recording
- also the exclusion of an external microphone jack is something to make note of
- Shutter lag
- yes its a point and shoot
- and yes its gonna have lag but timing fast action can be tricky if your finger is...

Good camera, with conditions...
If you switch to the P mode you can still use it like it's in auto mode, but you can change the settings like you want. You need to set the iso change speed to slow, so it will try not to raise the iso setting, and I set the max iso setting to 400. If It would let me I would set it to 200.
Pros:
- The camera has a good textured feel, though the controls are a little crowded, the lcd screen is excellent, and the battery life is ok
- I do not find it sluggish at all, in fact, it seems very snappy to me
- It is capable of taking excellent pictures if you are willing to adjust some settings first.
Cons:
- However, for an out of the box point and shoot, I am very dissapointed in the full auto mode
- You will need to adjust some things to get good pics in most cases
- It wants to raise the iso setting instead of using the flash in indoor settings, which results in a very noisy picture.

Awesome.
Good, solid build that you expect from Canon. Many of the more frequently used parameters can be adjusted using the dials on top of the camera. Swivel viewfinder lets you hold the camera over your head and tilt the viewfinder down.

I've come to love it. Snapping a picture when something happens is very fast, and the internal stabilization works wonders, even when taking quick shots. I haven't seen many frames with blur on them.

As a musician, I understand the value of a great instument. The better the instrument, the better the result, especially with study and practice. As someone who is realitively new to photography, I recently upgraded from a Kodak ZD10 to the Canon G12. Wow, what a camera!
