Canon PowerShot G12 Review
No surprise here - the Canon PowerShot G12 is an excellent camera with HD video that will appeal to loads of enthusiasts. But - and this is a big but - for around $100 more you can get a Sony NEX-3, a very compact camera with a much larger 14.2MP APS-C sensor, interchangeable lens capability, 720p...
Pros:
- Very good picture quality
- Low noise even in very low light
- Tweaks galore
- HDR a great option for still subjects
Cons:
- Expensive
- Too much noise at elevated ISOs
- No dedicated video button
- May be the end of an era

Out of the box the G12 is a very capable camera for the advanced amateur or professional photographer looking for a piggyback camera to add to their bag of tricks and take into the field.
Pros:
- Size Size Size
- the size of the camera makes it fit well into a small case logic case on the hip belt of a backpack for fast access on the trail while riding or hiking
- and for more protection into a small pelican case inside a camelback or backpack without sacrificing room for essential gear needed...
Cons:
- in video mode the controls were primitive at best and there was no optical zoom during recording
- also the exclusion of an external microphone jack is something to make note of
- Shutter lag
- yes its a point and shoot
- and yes its gonna have lag but timing fast action can be tricky if your finger is...

Canon PowerShot G12
The core specification hasn't changed since the G11, but a selection of minor upgrades address some of the issues facing the earlier model, while others take inspiration from the best of the competition, most notably its major rival from Panasonic.
Pros:
- 5x zoom with 28mm wide and 1cm macro
- Flash hotshoe
- RAW files and full manual controls
- Great quality 2.8in / 460k articulated screen
- Superb controls
- build and ergonomics
Cons:
- Slow continuous shooting at full resolution
- Can't optically zoom while filming
- Lumix LX5 and PowerShot S95 compelling alternatives
- No longer smaller than a camera with a DSLR sensor

Canon PowerShot G12 review
Like buses, you can wait ages for a top-end compact camera and then four come along at once. In the past few months we have reviewed the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 (AP 25 September), Samsung EX1 (AP 7 August) and the Nikon Coolpix P7000 (AP 16 October).

Canon PowerShot G12
As long as you're happy paying a premium for the Canon name, the G12 is an excellent do-almost-anything camera. Its main weakness is that it's almost identical to the earlier G11 model.
Pros:
- Great video quality
- Articulating LCD screen
- Excellent image quality
Cons:
- Screen is not colour accurate
- No real improvements over the G11 apart from HD video
- No external mic input
- Expensive compared to competition
