Canon EOS R6

The Canon EOS R6 promises "unprecedented levels of speed, operational ease, image quality and low light shooting". So far, so good! Let's take a look at this new mirrorless camera in greater detail.

Corner to corner coverage

The R6 boasts 100% x 100% AF frame coverage to every corner of the shot. In conjunction with advanced AF subject tracking for human eye, face and head detect and animal eye, face and whole body detect, this means your shots won't miss a thing.

Fast and silent

The R6 makes no shutter noise, and is capable of shooting up to 20 frames per second with full autofocus and auto exposure tracking support.

Movie magic

With more and more of us using our cameras for video purposes, Canon satisfies our demands with crystal-clear 4K 60p movie recording and Full HD 120p.

A stable genius

One of the smartest and most talked about features is the 5-Axis in Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS). This means image stabilization is possible even when using non stabilized lenses. When used in partnership with selected Canon RF lenses, the IBIS works in tandem with the lens-based Image Stabilizer to deliver coordinated control and reduce camera-shake blur up to an awesome 8 stops of shutter speed.

Dual SD card slots

The R6 makes it possible to instantly backup by writing direct to both cards at the same time, or recording one file type to one card and another type to the 2nd card.

Canon EOS R6 Body with EF Adapter EOSR6BB-AD review

The Canon EOS R6 receives our Editors Choice Award. These awards are not given out lightly, so when we do award them, know that it has been earned. I wouldn’t hesitate to make the Canon EOS R6 my go-to camera for professional work. The only issue is the price.

Canon EOS R6 Body with EF Adapter EOSR6BB-AD review

The Canon EOS R6 offers much of the capability of the EOS-1D X III in an enthusiast-level mirrorless body. It's only a 20MP camera but one that can produce great results across a huge range of photographic challenges.

A wide range of photographers; anyone looking to adopt the RF mount.

Stills + Video shooters needing utter dependability.

Canon EOS R6 Review: not the hybrid king, but a great photographers' camera

The Canon EOS R6 offers much of the capability of the EOS-1D X III in an enthusiast-level mirrorless body. It's only a 20MP camera but one that can produce great results across a huge range of photographic challenges. The tendency to overheat if used before shooting video undermines its appeal for people shooting video and stills together, but the footage is best-in-class if you can work around this limitation. A superb photographers' camera, even if it's not quite the perfect hybrid model.

A wide range of photographers, anyone looking to adopt the RF mount.;

Canon EOS R6 Body with EF Adapter EOSR6BB-AD review

The Canon EOS R6 is a versatile all-round camera that can shoot pretty much anything. Aside from a few differences, it's essentially an EOS R5 with lower resolution and less high-end video.

Best autofocus in town; Best full-frame IBIS; Pro-grade burst shooting; Twin card slots

Is 20.1MP enough?; Recording limits on 4K

Canon EOS R6 Body with EF Adapter EOSR6BB-AD review

The new Canon EOS R6 targeted at professional users is the Japanese company’s latest stab at the mirrorless market, following up on the EOS R and EOS RP out last year.

Canon EOS R6 Body with EF Adapter EOSR6BB-AD review

The EOS R6 exceeded my expectations in most areas, and while it’s definitely an issue, I don’t think the overheating is a deal-breaker for many hybrid shooters that will take stills and capture video.

Canon EOS R6 Body with EF Adapter EOSR6BB-AD review

It may not have a class-leading resolution but the Canon EOS R6 is a phenomenally good stills camera. Its autofocus system is fantastic and it can keep track of fast subjects moving in random directions with ease while shooting at 20 frames per second.

Similar 20Mp full-frame sensor to the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III; 12fps/20fps continuous shooting; Superb autofocus system

Slight crop in 4K video mode; 6Mp lower resolution than the Canon EOS 6D Mark II; Serious heat generation issues with 4K video

Canon EOS R6 Body with EF Adapter EOSR6BB-AD review

The EOS R6 is Canon's best mirrorless camera, with a stabilized, full-frame image sensor and an outstanding autofocus system, but video-first creatives will want to look elsewhere.

Outstanding 20MP image sensor; Quick; smart autofocus; Subject tracking at 20fps; Large; crisp EVF; Swing-out touch LCD; Dual UHS-II SDXC card slots; Strong 4K video quality

4K60 recording limited by heat; Fewer pixels than most competitors; Battery life could be better; Lens system still has room for growth

Canon EOS R6 Review

The Canon EOS R6 ($2,499, body only) is the more affordable of the company's pair of pro- and enthusiast-geared full-frame cameras. It's built to (almost) the same stringent standards as the 45MP EOS R5 ($3,899), but with a more down-to-earth 20MP pixel count. If you don't need loads of resolution, it's the better Canon mirrorless camera to get, as its autofocus, capture speed, and IBIS system are just as good as the high-dollar R6.A Pro-Grade, Full-Frame Build Canon has managed to pack quite a bit of camera into the R6's magnesium frame. The body measures 3.8 by 5.4 by 3.5 inches (HWD) and weighs in at 1.5 pounds—it's a little bit smaller and lighter than the 7D Mark II, but the R6 sensor is twice the size and mounted to a 5-axis stabilizer. The R6 gets there with a mirrorless design, one that drops the optics and flapping mirror used by SLRs in favor of an EVF with a direct view from the sensor. It doesn't feel undersized, either—a textured handgrip and angled shutter release m...

Canon EOS R6 review

The Canon EOS R6 might be the mirrorless alternative to the very popular EOS 6D Mark II DSLR, but it’s way more than just an upgrade. Its autofocus performance and image stabilization are best-in-class, while a blitzing burst speed makes it perfect for any sports or wildlife scenario. Long story short, it’s one of the best all-rounders you can get, although its 20MP sensor resolution might not suit everyone.

Best-in-class autofocus; Excellent full-frame IBIS; HEIF file support;

4K video recording limitations; Disappointing dynamic range in JPEGs; Expensive for an enthusiast-level camera
