Canon EOS R5

The EOS R5 from Canon gives us a world-first feature, as well as many other standout points that make this a must buy for the serious photographer - or even videographer!

World first video

This is the headline grabbing feature in the R5; it's the world’s first interchangeable lens digital camera with 8K movies - that's four times the detail of 4K!

Time-lapse movies

If you want to be creative using time-lapse you can do so in 8K, 4K and HD.

Amazing still shots

The still shots will be just as awesome as the video, with the ability to take amazing 45-megapixel photos at up to 20 frames per second. These shots are further optimised with 100% frame coverage.

New-Efficient-File-Format

Say goodbye to the traditional 8-bit JPG file. Canon's HEIF file format delivers a 10-bit compressed image file for high quality results with better colour reproduction.

Advanced face and eye detect

For better portrait shots, the R5's enhanced face and eye detect will give you the results you're after.

If it's wildlife you're snapping, this model features eye, face and whole body detect of our furry friends.

Smart and stable

The advanced AF is programmed using deep-learning artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Canon's world-leading in-body image stabilisation works with a lens's own Image Stabiliser to provide up to 8 stops of protection against camera shake.

A processor with the X Factor

The R5's unrivalled speed and precision is driven by a stellar processor: the DIGICX.

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

The Canon EOS R5 leaves little doubt that Canon is now serious about the mirrorless camera market. It has phenomenal specification with features like a 45Mp full-frame sensor, phase detection autofocusing that covers the whole frame, eye AF for humans and animals that works in video and stills mode...

45Mp full-frame sensor with full AF coverage; 12fps/20fps continuous shooting with continuous AF; Uncropped internal 8K video recording for up to 20 minutes

8K video will require lots of storage capacity

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, with class-leading video specifications, as well as impressive stills performance. For stills photography, it does not offer the highest resolution (that goes to the A7R IV) but does offer plenty of resolution.

Excellent image quality; High-resolution electronic viewfinder; Great vari-angle touch-screen; In-body image stabilisation (IBIS); 8K 30fps / 4K 120fps video; Dual slots; CFexpress / SD; Very good handling and controls

Noticeably shorter battery life with EVF; Video recording limits and "cooldown" periods; Limited compact lenses available

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

Here is the review of the Canon EOS R5, the first camera with 8K video. A double-edged sword, it turns out.

Almost the complete camera with 8K video, extreme resolution, insane firing rate and near perfect ergonomics.

8K is demanding for both the camera, the computer - and the photographer. Short battery life without vertical grip, and high price.

The EOS R5 is a good match for its target market: principally professional users who shoot both photos and video for work.

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

Still photographers will find little at fault with the high-resolution Canon EOS R5, but heat management issues will leave video-first creatives looking elsewhere.

Superb 45MP full-frame sensor; Fast; accurate autofocus; Subject tracking at up to 20fps; Big; brilliant EVF; Swing-out touch LCD; 5-axis IBIS; CFexpress and UHS-II SDXC card support; 8K and 4K video look great

Video record time limited by heat; Expensive CFexpress memory required for some features; Battery life could be better; Lens system still has some room to grow; Priced higher than competitors

Canon EOS R5 review

Canon's best ever stills camera, the EOS R5 is an incredibly powerful tool for almost every kind of photography. While that versatility doesn't quite extend to video, it is still a compelling hybrid option if you're aware of its limitations. The only major barrier for most of us is that price tag.

Tried-and-tested form factor; Very versatile stills camera; Incredible autofocus skills; Improved battery life; Solid IBIS system;

Not cheap; Dual memory cards will require investment; Recording limits for video shooting

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

The Canon EOS R5 is definitely an admirable performer befitting a price of $3,899 and its billing as the top dog in Canon’s R-Series mirrorless lineup. The camera has great ergonomics, even for those with large hands, and a comprehensive menu system that’s very easy to navigate.

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

Further, we’ve experienced overheating across the board with Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm when shooting videos. But the cameras have never shut down on us. Practically speaking, you’re just not going to keep shooting video. You’ll give the camera a break and go do something else on set.

Canon EOS R5 Body With EF Adapter EOSR5BB-AD review

“Canon held nothing back to deliver the full-frame camera its fans craved.”

Excellent; 45MP photos; Impressive 4K/8K video modes; Responsive subject-tracking AF; Good 5-axis image stabilization; Excellent build quality

Control layout could be improved; Can overheat in video mode; Risk of banding at high ISO
