Hands on: Canon EOS R3 review

A powerful blend of the old and new, the EOS R3 is shaping up to be one of the best sports and wildlife cameras ever made. Inside its old-school body is cutting-edge tech including a new stacked sensor, vehicle-tracking autofocus and impressive 6K video skills. It isn't perfect, and the Sony A1 does trump it in some areas like the EVF, but no other camera combines traditional DSLR charms with next-gen mirrorless tech in quite the same way as the EOS R3.

New sensor unlocks serious speed; Familiar design for pros; Powerful AF features and controls; Impressive video specs;

Large for a mirrorless camera; No EVF improvement from EOS R5; Too low-res for some snappers

Canon EOS R3 review

A powerful blend of the old and new, the EOS R3 is one of the best sports and wildlife cameras ever made. Inside its old-school body is cutting-edge tech including a new stacked sensor, hugely impressive autofocus skills and 6K video. The EOS R3's lower-resolution sensor means it has more limited appeal than the Sony A1 and Nikon Z9, and the A1 does trump it in some areas like the EVF. But no other camera combines traditional DSLR charms with next-gen mirrorless tech like the EOS R3.

Canon EOS R3 Review

The Canon EOS R3 ($5,999, body only) is a serious full-frame camera built for the most demanding types of photography, such as professional sports, exotic wildlife, reportage, and events. Its 24MP stacked image sensor focuses faster than standard chips, and is ideal for freezing fleeting moments of action. Its headline-grabbing feature, an autofocus system you can control by moving your eyes, isn't quite magical, but works well. Most importantly, the R3 handles like a dream and is durable enough to weather all kinds of environments. It earns both our TechX award thanks to its groundbreaking HDR viewfinder that shows the world more like an optical one, as well as our Editors' Choice award for its top-notch performance.Benefits of a Stacked Sensor The EOS R3 is one of a handful of full-frame cameras available today that use stacked image sensors. These types of chips put memory and sensor together for quicker readout. It's what allows the R3 to focus and take photos at 30fps using a...

The Canon EOS R3 is loaded with high-tech features, including an autofocus system you control with your eyes, but still nails all of the fundamentals, making it a phenomenal camera for sports and wildlife pros.

Intelligent autofocus with excellent subject recognition; 14-bit Raw imaging at up to 30fps; Large HDR viewfinder with OVF simulation; Supports CFexpress and UHS-II SD memory; Ample wired and wireless connectivity options; Sized-down gripped body handles beautifully; 6K60 Raw and 4K120 video modes

Eye Control focus isn't magical; Finicky USB-C charging support

Canon EOS R3 Body Only - Brand New review

The R5 and R6 were significant introductions for Canon last year, but the R3 takes things up a notch with the ability to shoot at 30fps, a new (or re-introduced) method of AF subject selection and a high-resolution vari-angle touchscreen.

24Mp full-frame sensor with full AF coverage, 12fps/30fps continuous shooting with continuous AF, Eye Control AF

6K raw video requires lots of storage capacity, Control layout different from EOS-1D X mark III and existing R-series cameras, Less durable buttons than on the 1D X III

Canon EOS R3 Body Only - Brand New review

The EOS R3 is the closest thing Canon has yet produced to a mirrorless EOS-1 Series camera, and many users are likely to wonder what it's missing to deprive it of that status. Canon tells us that while the spec and performance are very high, not every component is necessarily to 1-Series standard.

Canon EOS R3 Body Only - Brand New review

The Canon EOS R3 is high-end mirrorless camera aimed at professionals who demand the fastest speed and toughest body. It’s Canon’s most powerful mirrorless camera to date, and while it outperforms the 1Dx Mark III in most respects, it’s officially positioned between it and the EOS R5.

Canon EOS R3 Body Only - Brand New review

The Canon EOS R3 is a truly professional tool for both stills photography and video, while its layout is familiar from previous EOS cameras, both analogue and digital. It employs a 24-million-pixel stacked CMOS full-frame sensor with Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus system and can shoot at up to...
