Canon EOS 7D review by smithmaestro

After replacing my Canon 40D for this 7D, I was amazed at the feel and the image quality of my first picture. I have been using this more often... actually, all the time... ever since I bought it.
Pros:
  • Superb Magnesium Alloy body
  • weather sealed
  • great image quality
  • mounts EF-S and EF lenses
Cons:
  • Grainy at high ISO but not a big deal for me

Canon EOS 7D

While the Nikon D7000 has two memory card slots that are extremely convenient for overflow shots, backups and more, the Canon EOS 7D has just one. However, like pro-spec cameras, the 7D uses faster Compact Flash (CF) cards; the Nikon uses Secure Digital (SD) cards like other $1,000-and-under models.
Pros:
  • Great image quality
  • Pro-grade speed and features
  • All-metal and weather-sealed
Cons:
  • No continuous autofocus in movie mode
  • Only one card slot

In Review: Canon EOS 7D

The Canon EOS 7D has its frustrations, but this DSLR is an exceptional production tool. By Jay Holben I take great pains with my reviews to be as thorough as possible to consider all the angles and to put the tools through real practical testing.

If you expect a huge difference in overall image quality between the EOS 40D, EOS 50D and EOS 7D, you'd probably be somewhat disappointed, but that's not what the EOS 7D is really about. In terms of ergonomics and features, the 7D is clearly ahead of the other EOS crop sensor cameras.

Canon EOS 7D Review / Test Report

Canon has pretty much dominated the full format DSLR arena for several years but they suffered a couple of hefty blows from Nikon in the APS-C segment during the last few years. Canon was able to respond in the low end market but they didn't really offer any direct competitor to Nikon D200/D300(s)...
Pros:
  • outstanding build quality, high resolution combined with decent dynamic range, superb viewfinder (for an APS-C DSLR) inc
  • super-imposable grid lines, full HD (1080p @ 30 fps) movie mode, dual axis electronic level, excellent battery life
Cons:
  • "average" high-ISO performance
  • AWB (auto-white balancing) could be better in artificial light conditions

Canon 7D

The 7D is a spectacular camera for general use, while the 7D Mark II is much, much better for sports. For nature and landscapes I'd go the extra cost for the 5D Mark II in a heartbeat, but for action in reasonable light, the 7D is an awesome camera.
