Canon EOS 60D with 18-135mm lens

Superior ergonomics – particularly the bigger viewfinder and articulated screen – make this a shrewd choice for Canon upgraders willing to look beyond the 550D.

Canon EOS 60D Review

Announced in late August 2010 as the replacement for the 50D and "designed primarily for advanced amateurs," the Canon EOS 60D DSLR offers a modest resolution increase to 18 megapixels over the old camera's 15.1 as well as a 1080 HD video capability where none existed before.
Pros:
  • Swiveling monitor
  • Excellent image and color quality
  • Excellent high ISO noise performance for a cropped sensor
  • Good video image quality
Cons:
  • Slow AF acquisition time in video and Live View
  • No continuous AF in video mode
  • Awkward mode dial

The announcement of the 60D caused a great deal of consternation, particularly amongst existing owners of the X0D series cameras. The slot in the market previously occupied by the 50D is now split between the 7D and the 60D, and the newer model is much more about broadening its appeal to less-expert...
Pros:
  • Excellent image quality up to ISO settings unthinkable just one camera generation ago
  • Extremely high detail and resolution at base ISO
  • good per-pixel sharpness
  • Very good low-light performance
  • with low noise levels and good retention of detail
  • Good ergonomics
  • well shaped and comfortable hand
Cons:
  • Slow AF in Live Mode reduces benefit of articulated screen for stills shooting
  • White balance often excessively orange under artificial light
  • Slight tendency to overexpose in contrasty conditions
  • Post-processing options oddly arranged (and don't provide access to the Ambience options
  • Plastic

Canon EOS 60D

The $1,099 (direct, body only) 18-megapixel Canon EOS 60D is an update to the Canon EOS 50D, and is Canon's first D-SLR digital camera to feature an LCD mounted to an articulating arm, for viewing from nearly any angle.
Pros:
  • Sharp, beautiful images
  • Fast shooting
  • Excellent for low-light performance without a flash
  • Lots of video recording options
  • Manual operation during video recording.
Cons:
  • No continuous autofocus while recording video
  • Lens makes audible noise when re-focusing during video recording

Canon EOS 60D Review

At first blush, you'd think the EOS 60D would be more capable than the older EOS 50D. That's only partially true. It's got more pixels and a more sophisticated metering engine, but it lacks the metal body and has a lower maximum continuous shooting speed.
Pros:
  • Excellent balance
  • great choice of lenses
  • superb video capabilities
Cons:
  • Only nine focus points
  • obtuse UI

I bought this to supplement my Powershot A480, which has good color, but is only tiny. The 60D fits like a glove and is comfortable to use. I cheaped out and bought the kit lens 18-55 IS - the 50mm prime f1.8 showed just how poor this is.
Pros:
  • Great Photography Tool
Cons:
  • Way Complicated

Definitely worth the upgrade from 30D

So far so good! This was a recent upgrade from the 30D I have used for almost 5 years. The most practical feature I have enjoyed on this model over the 30D is the AUTO ISO feature when using AV/TV modes. The build construction and feel in my hand is not as good as my old 30D.
Pros:
  • Easy To Use
  • Good Image Quality
  • High ISO Performance
Cons:
  • Crop Sensor
  • Plastic body
  • Shutter sound

After outgrowing my Canon 350D a couple of years ago I decided that I would upgrade to a Canon 60D. It's probably the best choice I ever made and I definitely haven't regretted it. There's only one downside that I've ever come across whilst using the 60D, and that is the menu.

Canon EOS 60D DSLR Review

Despite its name, the 60D is most definitely the Rebel T2i's big brother, and not the successor to the 50D. The Canon EOS 60D has been released to bridge the gap between its Rebel T2i and 7D. It's a bold step by Canon, but has it paid off?
Pros:
  • 18 megapixels
  • Good results at higher ISO settings
  • Full HD movie mode
  • Flip-out LCD screen
Cons:
  • Some fiddly controls
  • Plastic body
  • Currently overpriced
