*But you probably shouldn't buy it

It's been a whole three and a half years since Canon announced the 5D Mark III - a camera that was already criticized by many as not quite enough of an upgrade compared to the Mark II when it launched.

Simply superb

Every bit as good as expected. I also upgraded to the latest Canon 100-400 zoom, and the 16-35mm zoom with IS, and the image quality of these combos is staggering. My main uses are landscape and wildlife, and although I was getting excellent results from the 5D Mk 2, previous 100-400 and 17-40mm...

Bright LCD; Comfortable Controls; Easy To Use; Great Image Quality; Strong Construction

Canon 5DS R

The Canon 5DS R, the highest-resolution EOS body to date, is an all-around striking camera that captures some seriously impressive, incredibly detailed photographs. The higher resolution sensor does make shooting technique more crucial though, and the video features and ISO range are limited...

Phenomenal resolution and sharpness; Fine Detail Picture Style is like in-camera Unsharp Mask; Excellent print quality; Decent high ISO performance; Improved normalized dynamic range compared to 5D Mark III; Decent burst speed with good buffer depths; Built-in intervalometer & timelapse movie mode

AF speed tested closer to consumer-level DSLRs; Dynamic range lower than competing models from Nikon & Sony; Lack of OLPF means subject to more aliasing artifacts with some subjects; No 60p video frame rate; No headphone jack; Timelapse video is only 1080p

Canon EOS 5DS R Review

For photography purists, Canon's 5DS R DSLR delivers outstanding stills at a whopping 50.6 megapixels.

Beautiful 50.6MP stills; Excellent optical viewfinder; Good low-light performer; Affordable alternative to medium-format

Expensive for casual use; Video only up to 30p; Focusing issues in video recording; No built-in wireless

Ten years ago Canon launched its 12.8MP EOS 5D, a camera that opened the door for many enthusiasts to shoot with a full-frame sensor. Fast-forward a decade, and Canon has continued the 5D line with the launch of the S and S R models.

Canon EOS 5DS R Review

With more than double the resolution of its 5D Mark III sibling, the Canon 5DS and 5DS R has set a new record for full-frame DSLRs with their 50.6-megapixel CMOS sensors. The 5DS ($3,699) and 5DS R ($3,899) are built around the same body, controls and most features of the 5D Mark III.

Highest resolution full-frame DSLR; Excellent image quality; Extensive feature set; Optical low pass filter cancellation for sharper images; Weather-sealed body

Potential for moiré under certain conditions; No Wi-Fi; GPS or HDMI out; Lacks headphone jack for audio monitoring

Great

The Canon EOS 5DS R delivers slightly more resolution and sharpness than the regular 5DS model at a very slight increase in the risk of producing unwanted moire effects. In reality these effects actually proved difficult to create on purpose out in the field, and as they can be largely removed.

Canon EOS 5DS R Review

The Canon EOS 5DS R is the top of the range full-frame 50.6 megapixel Digital SLR from Canon, and sits above the Canon EOS 5DS , with a low-pass cancellation filter designed to maximise the sharpness of the sensor.

50.6 megapixel full-frame sensor; A low-pass cancellation filter for improved resolution; 5fps continuous shooting; Fast focus and shutter response; High quality 3.2inch screen; Mirror vibration control system; USB3.0 will speed up image transfer; Customisable picture style options; Excellent build...

Care needs to be taken to get the best out of images; Lacks Wi-Fi; We were unable to shoot as many images in continuous drive mode as suggested
