Canon EOS-1D X Mark II review: The definition of excess

Very few people – and hardly any hobbyists – need the EOS-1D X Mark II. It's overqualified in virtually every sense – it's built too well, its images at high ISOs are better than most photographers need, its autofocus will outperform all but the most ambitious and switched on photographers.

4K 60fps video recording; Excellent build quality; Superb battery life

Very expensive; A little on the heavy side

If you're shopping for a camera that can handle any situation-from the sidelines of an NFL game to the front lines of a war zone-you'll quickly narrow the search to models from Canon and Nikon. The EOS-1D X Mark II ($5,999) is Canon's top-end model.

Canon EOS-1D X Mk II review

The Canon EOS-1D X Mk II is a replacement not just for the original 1D X, but also for the EOS-1D C pro video camera. And while in some areas the Mk II seems like a modest upgrade of the tech in the 1D X, in others it breaks entirely new ground.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Review

If you're shopping for a camera that can handle any situation—from the sidelines of an NFL game to the front lines of a war zone—you'll quickly narrow the search to models from Canon and Nikon. The EOS-1D X Mark II ($5,999) is Canon's top-end model. It offers some notable upgrades over the original 1D X ( at Amazon UK) , including an autofocus system that covers a wider area of the frame, vastly improved focus in Live View mode, and 4K video recording. It's an excellent performer, and one that's sure to be the workhorse of many a photographer. It falls just shy of Editors' Choice marks, which belong to rival Nikon's D5 ( at Amazon UK) , but the two cameras are so close in quality that the winner had to be determined by photo finish. DesignThe 1D X Mark II ( at Amazon UK) is virtually identical to its predecessor on the outside. It's a big camera, with an integrated vertical shooting grip, a tough magnesium build, and extensive protection from dust and splashes. It measures 6.6 by...

It may surprise some people to realize that the 1D series now dates back 15 years, beginning with the original Canon-1D in 2001. During that time there have been numerous advances in image quality, performance, and even entirely new features, such as video.
