Canon's EOS Rebel XS; Lightest Canon D-SLR To Date

Dubbed an "entry-level" D-SLR, the new Canon EOS Rebel XS is bound to be found under a number of Christmas trees this year, what with its $699 retail price and included EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

Canon EOS 1000D Review

Canon herald the EOS 1000D making digital SLR photography lighter and more affordable. The EOS 300D brought DSLR photography under £1000, so why shouldn't it work?
Pros:
  • Small and light
  • Easy to use
  • Live view
  • Excellent noise
Cons:
  • Grip material feels cheap
  • No wireless remote
  • No spot metering

Canon EOS 1000D

Replacing the popular EOS 400D at the entry level of Canon's DSLR range, the EOS 1000D brings yet another level to Canon's DSLR nomenclature, reflecting the days of film, when Canon's lowest-priced SLR cameras had four-figure model names.

Having helped create the 'affordable' DSLR, Canon has taken a while to respond to the latest, comparatively wallet-friendly offerings from the likes of Nikon and Sony. The 1000D is a pretty convincing response - it does just about everything it needs to do, and everything it does, it does well.
Pros:
  • Great results even with default settings
  • Good tonal response and dynamic range
  • Picture styles provides good control over image output (and prove consistent across models
  • Typical Canon CMOS noise-free images
  • remain detailed even at high sensitivities
  • Optional High ISO NR removes all chroma noise...
Cons:
  • Continuous shooting ability in RAW very limited (small buffer and low speed
  • Average automatic white balance performance
  • still very poor under incandescent light
  • Comparatively small viewfinder
  • Limited exposure compensation range (+/- 2.0 EV
  • Live view only useful for specific applications,...

Canon EOS 1000D / Rebel XS

The EOS 1000D, or Digital Rebel XS as it's known in North America, is Canon's latest entry-level DSLR. It's the true successor to the best-selling EOS 400D / Rebel XTi and positioned below the EOS 450D / Rebel XSi which was launched six months earlier.
Pros:
  • Image quality up with the best 10 Mpixel DSLRs
  • Accurate Live View with contrast-AF option
  • Kit includes stabilised lens
  • PC remote control software supplied
Cons:
  • Live View not as fuss-free as Sony A300
  • Screen fixed in position
  • unlike A300
  • Slow RAW continuous shooting
  • Some features downgraded from 400D / XTi

Canon EOS 1000D digital SLR

A couple of weeks ago I reviewed the Canon EOS 450D , the latest in a successful line of consumer digital SLR cameras, and discovered that although it is a good camera it is too expensive to be considered an entry-level model.
Pros:
  • Live view
  • Lightweight
  • Speedy operation
  • Good high ISO performance
  • Good image quality
Cons:
  • Overpriced
  • Noticeably plastic build
  • Slow live view focussing
  • No video

Canon EOS 1000D

The Canon EOS 1000D (also known as the Digital Rebel XS) is the new entry-level model in Canon's extensive range of digital SLR camera. The 1000D inherits features from both the more expensive EOS 450D and the older EOS 400D cameras.

Canon EOS Rebel XS

The baby brother to the Rebel XSi , the Canon EOS Rebel XS is the typical, almost-identical, but slightly less-powerful, version of that camera. As with the XSi, Canon offers two body designs for the XS--an attractive solid black, and a less-attractive, two-tone, silver and black style.
Pros:
  • Excellent photo quality for its class
  • solid performance
Cons:
  • Maximum ISO of 1,600
  • no spot meter
  • annoying, in-viewfinder, focus-point display

[REVIEW-CANON EOS 1000D camera]

This 10 megapixel camera is the first SLR from Canon to break (just) the $1000 barrier. The construction uses a lot of obvious plastic, including for the lens mount. It is small and light and is well suited to small hands. Ergonomics are just so-so.
Pros:
  • The picture quality is excellent, especially when a better quality Canon lens is fitted
  • Dynamic range is wide and the Auto Lighting Optimiser is useful in tricky situations, such as backlighting
  • Auto focus and exposure are very fast and accurate.
Cons:
  • The "live view" is ridiculous
  • The user guide recommends manual focussing in live view and yet Canon claim that they include the function because compact camera owners trading up to a DSLR demand it.
