[REVIEW-CANON EOS 1000D camera]

This 10 megapixel camera is the first SLR from Canon to break (just) the $1000 barrier. The construction uses a lot of obvious plastic, including for the lens mount. It is small and light and is well suited to small hands. Ergonomics are just so-so.
Pros:
  • The picture quality is excellent, especially when a better quality Canon lens is fitted
  • Dynamic range is wide and the Auto Lighting Optimiser is useful in tricky situations, such as backlighting
  • Auto focus and exposure are very fast and accurate.
Cons:
  • The "live view" is ridiculous
  • The user guide recommends manual focussing in live view and yet Canon claim that they include the function because compact camera owners trading up to a DSLR demand it.

Canon Digital Rebel XS Digital Camera Review

The EOS Rebel XS is Canon's newest entry-level SLR. Based on the Rebel XSi, it's marginally cheaper and less powerful, with a resolution of 10 megapixels versus 12 for the XSi, a smaller 2.5" LCD screen. It arrives into an already crowded marketplace, full of affordable, starter SLRs.

** Conclusion** The Canon EOS Rebel XS is a decently priced, entry-level SLR that scored well across our entire panel of tests, especially with regards to low light and dynamic range.

Canon EOS 1000D Review

The Canon EOS 1000D is Canon's response to competitors' models - think Sony A200 or Nikon D60 and you're on the right track. However, a response is one thing, but it's certainly not the conclusive answer that Canon should provide.
Pros:
  • Low-noise images
  • Introduces Live View
Cons:
  • Price point doesn't make sense
  • Poor kit lens
  • Low spec build and cramped layout
  • White balance is frequently off

The EOS Rebel XS ($699 list price) is the entry-level model in Canon's digital SLR lineup. The camera is essentially a stripped down version of the Rebel XSi: it has fewer pixels, a slower burst rate, and a smaller LCD than its big brother.
Pros:
  • Very good photo quality
  • with minimal noise
  • Compact body by D-SLR standards (though it's not for everyone
  • Good kit lens
  • with image stabilization
  • Dust reduction system
  • Fast performance in most respects
  • Live view with contrast detect AF
  • magnification
  • and a histogram (though see issues below,...
Cons:
  • Rebel XSi only costs a little more, Small, slippery right hand grip, Very slow contrast detect AF in live view mode
  • nearly useless in low light, Live view not available in all shooting modes, LCD and optical viewfinder both on the small side, Sluggish RAW format continuous shooting

Pros:
  • Rebel XSi performance for less bucks
  • Fantastic
  • reliable AF system
  • Extremely clean high-ISO shots
  • More processing options than you could possibly need

Canon EOS 1000D review

Anyone choosing the Canon EOS 1000D as their first DSLR is best advised to opt for both camera and 18-55mm image stabilised zoom, as tested, for just £80 more than the body-only price. As typical with a DSLR you'll have to provide your own memory card.

Hands On: Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D

After seeing Nikon spring back to life with its high-end powerhouses, Canon has decided to change its entry-level strategy starting with the new EOS Rebel XS. A replacement for the EOS Rebel XTi, the XS does away with the company's method of letting last year's model serve as its bargain SLR.
