Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens Review

There is nothing like the arrival of a new Canon Super Telephoto Lens to bring the excitement of Christmas to any time of the year. And the hit on the credit card from this lens is considerably larger than the hit from most households' Christmas expenditures.

Canon's EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM; Super Telephoto Power

The arrival of the new Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens was a case of perfect timing as within a few days I'd be on the road for a couple of weeks photographing the abundance of wildlife at the Blackwater Refuge.

The tripod mounting bracket is fully integrated into the main barrel and rotates rather cleverly internally after a locking knob has been released. There are click-stops at 90-degree intervals which makes switching orientations a lot easier from behind the camera.

Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens

Canon's EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens is a 'big gun' in many ways. Weighing 4.5 kilograms and almost half a metre long with its lens hood attached, it's a challenge to shoot with. However, it also has a maximum aperture of f/5.6, which is outstanding for a lens with such a long focal length.

Best telephoto lens I own

Resolution has always been my highest priority and this lens certainly is the best. The auto-focus features are superb. After using the 600mm f/4 L lens for years trading it in for the 800 was the best trade I've ever made.

Fast auto-focus; Superior build quality; Super-sharp images

wish it had a larger aperture

A great performer in wildlife, sports and news photojournalism

A great performing lens when it comes to Wildlife and news photojournalism. Of course you can use this lens for sports as well. But it might be a bit tight standing at the field, because you might be too close.

Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM review by genotypewriter

It's an excellent lens in every regard. Compared to the 200 f2L IS (which I have) it falls a bit short in the CA performance. But if you've used the 200L IS this is something you'll fuss about with every lens you use and unfortunately the 800L IS isn't immune to it.

Everything

Nitpicking a bit but CA

Very Light and I captured the photo I really dream of.

With the use of my lenshide and this Super Telephoto lens I did capture photos of wildlife that is so crisp and stunning. I pair this one with my canon 1DX because I observed that my 1DX give me more freedom with the light in low light situation. However, I sometimes I used also my 5DS.

One incredible lens

I have owned one of these lenses for over 10 years and it is sensational. Great autofocus and fabulous bokeh. Wonderful wildlife lens especially for birds. Works well with my Mk3 1.4x TC not great with 2x and MF only with the latter. Yes it is on the heavy side but hardly surprising.

Quick Focus; Rugged; Sharp Focus

I would shoot at f5.6 at all time.

The images produced at f5.6 are sharper than anything from any lens I've ever seen. Color and contrast are both excellent. Focus is fast and accurate. A keeper!
