I have heard this lens described as cute, tiny and a toy. I suppose it is cute and it is very small but it is not a toy. The build quality is very good. It will add only 130g to the weight of your camera.

This Lens has been Awesome taking Christmas Pictures Lens it's great in low light and the STM is amazing for Video I have this and the 50mm f1.8 and I use this 99% of the time absolutely amazing little lens makes the Camera almost compact I use it on the Canon T5i and no regrets in buying it and I...
Wont feel lazy to carry this everywhere i go - Fits well on my 7D and now its easy for me to carry my camera ever were for clicking desert pictures.
Amazing quality ; Original; Compact and good for carrying everyday
Absolutely Nothing
I am using this lens with an SL1. This is a great camera and lens combination. I have the 18-55 STM which is also very good, but the size, image quality and small aperture of the 40mm makes it an excellent all around carry lens.

None
Pros: Small form factor Pretty Sharp Pictures Cons: None Other thoughts: I am using it on both Canon 7D Mark II and Canon 80D... and the pics are coming out clean. I would say that this is a great lens for street photography. Doesn't add much weight to the camera body.
Wait!!!! It's Sharp!!! Well, the review is for all those who are in dilemma between 50mm f1.8 and 40mm f2.8. On the spec sheet one would think that 50mm beat the hell out of 40mm, with it's larger aperture and better focal length for portraits.
I really didn't feel this was the lens for me, quite slow to focus and not as good as its 35mm and 50mm counterparts
Super images, especially considering the size and price. On an APS-C body, it's a 60mm "normal" lens that's biting sharp wide open, edge to edge. Keep it in your front pocket. On full frame it's a little soft wide open, but still charming. I hope Canon continues to make lenses like this.
Awesome "normal" lens for APS-C
Focus a little slow
Bought this impressive little lens with a Canon SL1. Makes my camera feel even smaller. Pictures are amazing and portability is great. Good at night shots and even better for portraits. Focus is not as fast and quiet as the new18-55mm STM that comes with the SL1, but its still a great lens.
This is my second of these. It is better value, better build, and picture quality than the basic 50mm Canon lens. It's a tough little thing and I use it about 80% of the time compared with my other lenses.
