Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM review

When it comes to choosing a wideangle lens, photographers using a Canon full-frame DSLR have one of the best ranges available. For those working to a strict budget there's the very respectable EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM, while for those who can justify the cost there's the superb EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM,...

Canon 11-24mm f/4L USM review

We first mentioned the new Canon 11-24mm f/4L lens in our Canon EOS 5Ds news . Not surprisingly, Canon's new 50-megapixel DSLR has been stealing all the headlines, but in its own way this new lens even more ground-breaking.

Stunning Coverage

I have had this lens for about 6 weeks, takes a few uses to adjust the way you look at the world, incredible how close you can get to a subject. The lens is heavy, but anyone used to pro lenses should find that isn't a problem.

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM

We don't often cover lenses on their lonesome, but the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM is a bit special. It's the widest-angle rectilinear zoom lens for full-frame DSLRs in the world, making it a perfect companion for the just-announced or 5DS R.

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Review

For many years Canon photographers had a reason to be jealous of those on the Nikon side of the fence. There was no match to Nikon's excellent AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED ($1,996.95 at Amazon) zoom for full-frame SLRs. Unveiled early last year, the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM from Canon ($2,999) doesn't match the Nikon's sexy f/2.8 aperture, but it captures a significantly wider field of view—the widest of any rectilinear zoom lens on the market today. It's not perfect—there's some barrel distortion, and corners are dim at its widest angle and aperture—but given the design, which goes beyond the typical definition of ultra-wide, it's an exceptional performer, and worthy of being called Editors' Choice. DesignThe 11-24mm ($2,699.00 at Adorama)  is a big chunk of glass. It measures 5.2 by 4.3 inches (HD) and weighs in at a hefty 2.6 pounds. The bulbous front element precludes the use of screw-in filters, but you can use a filter holder system from Lee if you want to use a graduated neutr...

The Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM is a unique lens that combines an incredibly wide field of view with a zooming design and constant aperture.

Ultra-wide field of view; Maintains f/4 when zoomed; Very sharp

Shows some barrel distortion; Corner and edge dimness; Omits filter support; Big and heavy; Expensive

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens - Brand New review

This is a very good lens. It has a useful IS system that allows handholding for long exposures, and less vignetting and quality fall-off at the edges than expected. If the ability to handhold your camera is more important than achieving a shallow depth of field, this model might be a better option...

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens - Brand New review

The 16-35mm ƒ/4L IS USM occupies an interesting niche in Canon's line up of wide-angle zoom lenses. Some may question the usefulness of having IS on a wide-angle lens, but it does come in handy both for movie-making, and for when you don't want to lug around a tripod.

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Lens - Brand New review

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present
