Perfect gift for a camera lover
I bought this for my partner's birthday, after he told me that he wanted a prime lens. I researched canon prime lenses on the canon website, and saw this one listed as a prime lens.
Great
I find the lens works well even in cold weather and produces a sharp clean image. It give a greater stand off distance than the 50mm with as good results. I am currently using a 10D and have found no issues, works well with the existing flash.
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro - (APS-C) Review / Test Report
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro may be a comparatively old lens by now but it's still capable of playing in the top league - easily. It provides sharp images straight from f/2.8 and it's downright excellent between f/4 and f/8.
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Review
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM may not be the company's top of the line macro lens, but it does capture sharp images with 1:1 magnification. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM ($599.99 direct) is a telephoto lens for Canon cameras that can focus close enough to capture objects with true 1:1 magnfiication. It is adequately sharp, even at its maximum aperture, but does suffer from some optical issues in certain high-contrast situations. There are other macro lenses of similar focal lengths available for Canon cameras, including the company's own EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM—part of its top-end L series of lenses—as well as the manual focus Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100($645.00 at Amazon)—but both will put a bigger dent in your wallet than this relatively inexpensive lens. The lens is rather compact when you consider its focal length, aperture, and close focus capability. It measures 4.7 by 3.1 inches (HD) and weighs about 1.3 pounds. Standard 58mm filters are supported, and the front element doesn't rotate so using a polarizing filter is possible if desired. There is a focus limiter switch on the lens, so you can set it to...- Sharp images
- 1:1 magnification
- Inexpensive
- Prone to color fringing
- Lens hood not included
- No image stabilization

Decent, technical lens but I miss the IS capability
I bought this lens as my first macro to go with my 600D and for me (having been away from SLR's for over 10yrs) it took a bit to get used to. We went for a spin in the Botanical Gardens during mostly sunny weather to test it out.
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens Review
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens is an excellent macro lens - and may be Canon's most fun per dollar lens. This is the lens I most frequently recommend for someone starting out in macro photography – at least most frequently recommend until the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens was...
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
There are virtually no criticisms of this lens that we can come up with! The build is a little short of L quality, but is still well built. The optical performance is first class with no nasty or disappointing surprises and as for the handling, it's a pleasure to use.- Good build quality
- Very good optical performance
- Nice handling with no extending front element
- A little pricey
- but you get what you pay fr
- Still no hood included in the price
A 100mm macro lens has long been the standard for photographers using full-frame cameras. The magnification of the 100mm lens provides sufficient working distance from most subjects and does not add a lot of weight or bulk compared to shorter macro lenses.
Canon EF 100 mm f/2.8 Macro USM
When it comes to macro photography lenses, the Canon's offer is more modest than e.g. the offer of Sigma. It doesn't mean, though, that we have no choice at all. For full frame bodies you can use a Canon 50 mm f/2.5 EF Macro, a Canon 100 mm f/2.8 EF USM Macro and a Canon 180 mm f/3.5L EF USM Macro.- excellent image quality in the frame centre and at the frame edge at all apertures
- negligible chromatic aberration
- distortion at practically zero level
- very low coma
- moderate astigmatism
- silent and relatively quick autofocus
- good build quality
- autofocus could have been more accurate
