Possibly the most fun with a lens
The Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro is an amazing lens. As a regular lens, it excels. The 100mm length is great for portraits and as a telephoto, although it gets a bit long on the crop sensor consumer cameras where it equals a 160mm.
Released in March 2000, this lens manages to offer most of the features you'd expect in its price bracket. Constructed with 12 elements in 8 groups, the focusing system is the internal type, meaning the front element remains fixed in position and doesn't extend or rotate.
Extremely fun lens
This is an extremely fun lens for those funniest photo ops where you want a close up and magnified image. It is also a nice portrait lens and I really enjoyed shooting some awesome portrait snaps using my 550D. I received this lens within 5 business days and it arrived nicely packed.
Awesome, AWESOME
It does just what a Macro should. 1:1 with perfect quality. Quiet focus but noisy when REALLY close up. Fantastic as a portrait lens as well as a Macro. Feels a little light for me but I'm old fashioned.- Everything
- Lens shade would be nice
lens is as sharp as canon says,
I had earlier problems with focus, but now my biggest gripe is no lens hood supplied, and Canons tripod ring mountfor this lens, is far dearer than other brands ([*]I`d expect). I have one of these and it works very well, cost me all of $11.00 australian. from Hong Kong of course.- Durable
- Nice Bokeh
- Strong Construction
- Lens Creep
- Poor in Low Light
Great Lens.
This is my first macro lens. The choice was between the Canon 60mm 2.8 macro or this one. After much research and a sale price drop of $80 from OneCall, I chose this one. The sale price put the new price from OneCall in an acceptable range with an used one. I am glad I chose this one.- Consistent Output

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens is a very good choice for macro photography of butterflies, insects or flowers. It offers excellent optical performance and middle-of-the-road working distance, size and weight.
- 1
- Fast Focusing - Utilizing USM (Ultrasonic Motor), the Canon 100 Macro internally focuses very fast, quietly and very accurately, 2
- Non-Extending or Rotating - When focusing at 1x subject distances, the lens does not extend, and the front element does not rotate, 3.
- 1
- Build quality - this USM Macro lens has a reasonable build quality although it's not quite as solid as the L-Series lenses, 2
- Image Stabilization - this lens does not feature the image stabilization present with the significantly more expensive Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro Lens
Great lens
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend- Fast / accurate auto-focus
Fantastic Lens
This lens has blown me away. It is my first IS lens from Canon. I own a 85 1.2L and it is slow to focus and forget about hand hold as it has no IS. This 100 2.8L macro is super sharp, fast auto focus and accurate as well.- Consistent Output
