It's about how you use the lens and what you use it for. I've got a ton of amazing shots with it. Great image quality.
Pros:
- The reach, the quality of the photos with the reach
- I even got great close up photos of insects with it
- It's definitely worth the money you pay for it
Cons:
- slow lens speed 4.5-5.6...but you get more than what you pay for

Long Reach Zoom - Good for Sports
Purchased approximately 6 months ago to photograph my son's soccer team in action, this has been a good lens. In terms of features, it has 2 image stabilization settings, a close up focus limiter to save on battery power and is very well constructed. This is a tank of a lens.
Pros:
- Wedll constructed
- good reach
- sharp lens
Cons:
- Needs tripod or monopod
- not as bright as some L lenses

my experience using the Canon EF 100-400mm L USM lens
I use this lens on my 7D to shoot at air show / outdoor sports and wildlife ,The push / pull design is fast if you need to zoom rapidly in or out ,The wide focal length and max focal length and excellent image quality make the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM a highly versatile lens.

Meets and exceeds expectations
This lens is replacing a Tamron 75X300 mm lens AND a heavy and unvieldy Bower 650/1300 mm. I plan to purchase a Canon Extender Lens but as of now I do not know how it works with 100X400 mm lens.
Pros:
- The lens is easy to use
- The automatic focus is quick and accurate
- The manual focus override is smooth and easy to use
- The image stabilizer is very effective and I am able to do much more in handheld mode than I had expected.
Cons:
- The weight of the lens makes for a heavy item to carry for an extended period - but - it is comparable with lenses of similar quality and range

First impressions good- well packaged within a quality case - only a short and sharp shoot so far but very pleased with the quality of the early morning images - little heavy for a every day shoot - quality tripod a must - and the sliding zoom takes a bit of getting used to.............

suction pump!!
I would rate it 1 start for how it was when i bought it !! cropped pictures taken from a 18-135 kit lens were better than 100-400 L !! super soft out of focus images, both on AF and MF modes !!

My GoTo lens for Sports
I shoot youth Football and Baseball and this lens lives on my camera about 6 months of the year. It's big and heavy but the breadth of range allows for flexibility that I'd otherwise need two bodies for.
Pros:
- Consistent Output
- Nice Bokeh
