Outstanding Lens But A Little Pricey

I bought this lens due to Canon's "L" lens reputation and it seemed like a logical addition to my Canon 5D Mk II body with 24-105mm F4 kit lens to give me a wide range of zoom. This is an outstanding lens!
Pros:
  • Fast / accurate auto-focus
  • Strong Construction
Cons:
  • Cost

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 USM L IS - Full Format Review / Test Report

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 USM L IS is almost a boring lens but in a positive sense. It shows no extreme weaknesses nor strengths. You will find sharper lenses - primes that is - but it is very sharp for a zoom lens, especially considering its 400mm, and that's throughout the range at all...

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

In low light conditions i use this lens mounted on monopod manfrotto 682B with 322RC2 joystick without any problem. Also i use this lens with 1.4 Canon extender on monopod with manuel focus,in this case images are a bit soft but if you are a raw shooter like me, it is not a poblem...
Pros:

  • not too heavy
Cons:
  • a bit soft images with jpegs but no problem with raws, rarely auto focus fails in low light conditions(especially inearly morning times

Great lens for wildlife photographers

This is the first lens I got with my Canon 30D and now I use it on my 7D. For wildlife photography the reach of a 400mm is twice that of the 70-200 zoom. 400mm is 640mm with a smaller sensor - smaller sensor is like having a 1.6x tele converter. IS is great.
Pros:
  • zoom range.
Cons:
  • Push, pull zoom
  • Maybe f 5.6 at max zoom

REVIEW: Canon 100-400mm L IS USM

This is Canon's longest zoom lens and is categorised as one of their L range. The lens has been around for some time now, earning itself a somewhat mixed reputation amongst digital photographers that didn't arise in the days of film. We take a look at this phenomenon.
Pros:
  • Good contrast and colour
  • Good AF speed that is quiet in use
  • Nice focal range at acceptable 3:1 ratio
  • Holds its value well
Cons:
  • Awkward manual focus at longer focal lengths
  • Known problem with bearings giving up the ghost
  • Wear in the bearings may well cause deterioration in performance
  • May drag dust into the sensor
