Excellent lens for distance photos
The Canon 100-400mm lens has been great for shooting photos at a distance while still having flexibility to pull in to 100mm. Although a 400mm f/5.6 prime or a 400mm f/4 will probably take better photos, the versatility and price of this lens are much more reasonable for an all-around hobbyist like...
good for the prce
I own for this lens for more than one year and I say I like this lens so much. I use this for wild life photography and long distance shots. This lens is user friendly and less weight compared to competitors. down side of this lens is little bit noisy and slow auto focusing.- focal length and weight
- slow auto focus
Excellent lens. If your thinking about it just do it. Its extremely flexible and whilst not a small lens it is a lens you can easily walk around with for hours. In this sort of price/size range your options are 300F4L IS, 400 5.6L,70-300L IS and 100-400LIS.
- Superb lens, amazing telephoto flexibility in a single lens
- You just can't beat the flexibility offered by this lens
- Its not cheap or small
Top Notch lens
The Canon EF 100-400 mm f/ 4.5-5.6L IS USM lens has got to be one of the best value for money lenses out there and is a must for anyone getting into wildlife photography. If you have a Canon DSLR, there might be better lenses out there but no way near the price.
Very easy to use, quick to focus and sharp images.
I have used this lens, coupled to my 7D, virtually every day since I got it just over 2 weeks ago and I am impressed with its ease of handling. Small birds feeding during the first couple of hours after daylight have been my main subjects to date.- Superior build quality
- Super-sharp images
- Fast auto-focus
AS GOOD AS ANYTHING AVAILABLE, UNBEATABLE VALUE FOR MONEY
AS GOOD AS IT GETS UNTIL YOU WANT TO SPEND DOUBLE THIS PRICE RANGE So quiet you'll wonder if your battery didnt charge lastnight, and fast enough to forgive you your errors and send your pics back with the pro finish everytime ~ Not just sometimes ~ every time ~ cant recommend using them without a...
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens Review
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM is the longest telephoto zoom lens currently manufactured by Canon. First released back in late 1998, the lens currently retails around US$1,600 (as of October 2010) and is typically used for wild-life and sports photography.
Really wanted to like this lens but too many flaws
I studied many reviews on this lens and waited over a year before finally purchasing it. Walmart had it at a fair price with a good return policy, and the shipping cost was reasonable. I knew the lens has some limitations, but I really thought it would work for me.
Super lens
On 2 occasions I have made 500 + shots with this lens and my 40D in 3 hrs. Rarely does it give me a bad image. The problem with birds is when they are in behind limbs etc. The autofocus will focus on the limbs in front. Manual focus is slow and the bird may be gone- Great birding lens
- Crisp well focused images
- Originally thought the f/4.5-5.6 might be a problem with light, however when I shot birds it is always outside and it has not been a problem
- I don't use a monopod and the IS does great.
- With a 2X extender the auto focus does not work and this makes it 800mm
- Trying to manually focus at 800mm makes the focus ring very coarse
- As a result I take a few shots and refocus and take more in case the focus was not optimum.
Heavy but excellent.
Delivry by J&R was very quick. The lens is fantastic. I'm sorry I waited a year to purchase it. Though I've only had it a week I can already tell that it will work for me personally better than the shorter length Canon telephoto zoom lenses - which are themselves great lenses.- Fast / accurate auto-focus
- Nice Bokeh
- Phenomenal lens
- Rugged
- Heavy
