Call of Duty: Vanguard review

Call of Duty: Vanguard uses the last days of WWII to present a promising single-player campaign that ultimately feels half-baked in execution. Thankfully, developer Sledgehammer Games ensures online modes include enough refreshing ideas to keep them from coming off as just another yearly coat of new paint.

Refined core shooting mechanics; Audio and visual presentation; Zombies is more streamlined;

Disappointing campaign mode; No gunfight mode; Combat Pacing is a wonky addition

Another Mediocre CoD

Despite not often enjoying FPS games set during WW2, I kept an open mind going in to CoD Vanguard. I wasn't expecting a great game considering Sledgehammer's uninspired first attempt at WW2, unimaginatively titled "CoD WW2", but I wasn't going in to this game expecting to dislike it based off SHG's (Sledgehammer Games) first attempt at making a game set in the 40's era. I won't give a long analysis or give away any spoilers regarding the campaign, but it isn't as if you'll desire playing past the 45 minute mark. To say the least; Vanguards story & dialogue is tragic at best. No memorable characters despite playing as multiple soldiers across the world during the most prolific & horrific conflict in history. They're bland & uninteresting, no character in the story contains any amount of charisma, funny or interesting moments, or any amount of intelligent thinking. I wouldn't consider any characters, playable or NPC to be close to serviceable for a "story driven experience". Speaking

Only if you want a complete set of COD on shelf

Graphics are awful, took hours to load, update, and then couldn't even find the basic settings adjustments like "look inversion" easily. What a waste of money. When a game as institutionalised as COD gets a new version, I expect BETTER, not regression or overcomplication. You messed with the secret sauce, it tastes like poop now.

disappointing

can’t use for same console multiplayer on zombies (only reason we buy these games). the rendering is awful & looks 15 years old. i expect much more from COD.

Very good combat and a nice selection of gamemodes

Call of duty Vangaurd is a great game for a person who has enjoyed past Call of Duties and like multiplayer experiences but it does not have a single player campaign and I believe that they could've made it a little better with a campaign. Overall it is a great game

Call of Duty: Vanguard review: Innovating in the wrong direction

I fell back in love with Call of Duty two years ago when the series’ Modern Warfare storyline was rebooted. The game featured a lot of the good parts from the classic Call of Duty experience, all while adding in some fun new bits. Tactical sprint was a joy, new options for equipment varied gameplay, and new weapons (including a lever-action rifle that I devoted way too much time to getting good with) were a joy to use. Call of Duty: Vanguard seemed to emulate a lot of that leading up to its release, using the same engine as Modern Warfare and mimicking the game’s more realistic feel. However, Vanguard is all show and very little substance. It flexes some features, claiming that they’re new when really only one of them is. Outside of multiplayer, Vanguard‘s campaign and zombies modes both try to reinvent their classic interpretations, although both manage to fail in those attempts. Having spent around 15 hours with the game so far, I feel content to set my controller down and walk away ...

Guns feel wonderful; Classic, fast-paced multiplayer; Destructible environments add depth;

Forgettable campaign; New Zombies formula isn't as fun; Unbalanced weapons in multiplayer; A haven for cheaters;
