CAT S60 review: The toughest phone money can buy

Cat S60 is a smartphone that comes with military grade water, dust and drop proofing...

You will never ever worry about what happens to this phone if it takes a fall on the ground, or slips into the pool as you were checking the water's temperature; It is that kind of phone and just the looks of it gives you that kind of confidence, I did take the phone into a pool and could still use...

Cat S60

The Cat S60 is thick and hefty with an unapologetically industrial design. In addition to being a tough SOB that can endure 6-foot drops and the most waterproof phone made to date, it also has one thing no other phone possesses: a built-in thermal imaging camera.

The Cat S60 features a built-in thermal imaging camera; It can consistently survive 6 foot drops onto concrete and can take a 16 foot dunking into water; It has an expandable microSD card slot and loud front-facing speakers

It's significantly thicker and heavier than other smartphones; The thermal imaging feature while cool and fun, is mostly useless aside from some specific cases

Cat S61 Review

Not everyone will exploit the Cat S61's considerable talents, but those that do will likely find it invaluable.

Rugged and water resistant; Thermal imaging camera; Long battery life; Useful measurement tools; Air quality sensor

Very expensive; Heavy and chunky; Sluggish at times

Cat S60 review: a rugged phone that can see in the dark

Owning a smartphone means you're also privy to the very particular fear of dropping that smartphone. And many of us go different lengths to mitigate this problem. Some of us slap our phones in big, fat, protective cases. Others are like me - we lie to ourselves and pretend we'll be fine without one.

Very rugged; Thermal camera is fun and useful; Good standard camera

Mediocre screen; Expensive; Hefty design; Thermal camera app is sluggish

Caterpillar CAT S60

The CAT S60 is a niche product that is aimed at those with a very rugged lifestyle. If you want a phone with top of the line specifications, then this isn't the phone you are looking for.

Drop proof to 1.8m; Waterproof to 5m; Thermal camera

A faster processor would have been warranted; Primary camera needs some work

Ruggedness didn't work for me

Perhaps I could say my CAT S60 was cursed or that little gremlins were living inside, but the fact is that one of the reasons I bought the phone, aside from FLIR, was the fact I could dive up to 5 meters in water. This allows me to go freely with my kids and play in water and take some nice videos.

FLIR camera

Does not perform as stated under specifications; Bad camera shots

Cat S60 review

The Cat S60's spec sheet reads more like a superhero's vital statistics on paper, and the military-grade protection, strong angular looks and the ability to identify heat signatures make it a thing of wonder.

Thermal imaging; hard as nails build quality; long-lasting battery; genuinely useful apps

Medium-powered; screen only HD; gimmicky Underwater mode; high price; niche appeal

I wanted rough, I got rough!

Battery life is a huge plus! Working great and with good control over both sim cards and an SD card in. My pc cant read it but I dont update windows so I assume thats d problem. Camera is shit, it makes my face so red on skype, I look like an old school drunk and its useless for any kind of decent...

Great call quality, loud ring tone and really useful to be able to wash site dust off it at the end of the day; Thermal imaging camera is extremely useful

A bit too easy to catch the power button in your pocket and unlock the screen

Cat S60

If you need a super-rugged phone with a built-in thermal imaging camera, look no further than the Cat S60. But at $600, it's nearly as pricey as top-tier devices like the rugged Samsung Galaxy S7 Active and the shatterproof Moto Z Force Droid, both of which offer far better performance all around.

Accurate thermal imaging camera; Rugged, waterproof build; Useful pre-installed apps; Latest Android software; Expandable storage

Sluggish camera sensors; Mediocre specs for the price; Back flap can pop open upon impact; Lackluster call quality
