Binary Domain (PS3) Review

Binary Domain isn't one of those games that have had people talking for months, picking over screenshots and examining each and every trailer with a magnifying glass and notepad. I remember posting its teaser trailer on a news site nearly a year ago and never hearing anything about it again, which...

Binary Domain Review

Binary Domain's protagonist Dan Marshall spends most of his time shooting robots, while the player spends most of their time talking to robots. Well, sort of. One of the game's most unique features is that it allows you to use voice-commands to communicate with your comrades.

Robots react to damage in unique ways; Sophisticated script; Convincing vision of the future; Amazing boss fights

Squad commands are underdeveloped; Voice-recognition is inconsistent; Tacked on multiplayer

Binary Domain Review

In the end you are entering into a game that achieves a goal not commonly found in titles this gen. Witty, well spoken dialogue, an engaging storyline (if not a little cheesy), and the perfect blend of difficulty mixed with action.

Dialog is fantastic and is delivered well; Robots can be surgically dismantled with gunfire; Boss battles are epic

Music is poor; sound effects are pretty standard; Level design is very linear; but it works; Twitchy character movements hinder some action sequences

Binary Domain (PS3) - Review

So you like playing third-person shooters you say? You say you're tired of killing the same old enemies? You go on to say that you're tired of the zombies, the aliens, the terrorists, and zombie aliens? Well, SEGA feels you.

Binary Domain Review | More Than Meets The Eye

Maybe it's the deliciously satisfying procedural damage. Perhaps it could be the themes and motifs pulled from a hundred and one of my favourite works of science fiction; from films such as The Terminator , Dark City and Blade Runner, to the writings of Asimov, Clarke, and Heinlein.

Fantastic set-pieces and enemy design; particularly the bosses; Tight gunplay compliments an excellent story; Tries to innovate in terms of voice commands and interaction..

...but doesn't always succeed; Conversations can sometimes feel a little superfluous; Context-sensitive buttons could be sharper

Binary Domain Review (PS3, Xbox 360)

Twenty minutes in to 3 rd person shooter ‘Binary Domain' and I was starting to get worried. Two generic looking soldiers, a lack of story information and an extremely patronising tutorial had left me convinced that the following ten hours were going to be a trudge. Luckily I was totally wrong.

Interesting story; Some strong characters; Good voice work and sound effects; Looks brilliant

The voice commands are much more miss than hit; Some cringe worthy dialogue; Multiplayer doesn't really need to be there

Binary Domain: Better than you think it would be

Binary Domain is a science fiction, team based, third person shooter, a bit like Gears of Wars expect set in the future of Japan where an organization who produces robots are committing crimes.

"More of a 4.5 than 4"

This would probably have been Sega's best TPS to date, if they had only executed it better. It's an excellent game and I'd put it on par with Vanquish. But it's just not as polished. The voice command could have made the game, but it just wasn't up to standard compared to the rest of the game.
