Axiom Verge Review – PlayStation 4

★★★★ 4.0
Verdict: Due to a mixture of age and gaming ignorance, I missed early entries in both the Metroid and Castlevania series, only catching up with each when they entered the 3D-era. Despite this, I have come to appreciate the so-called Metroidvania genre in more recent times, spurred on by releases such as...
Pros:
  • Positives Interesting, varied environments
  • Simple yet solid gameplay
Cons:
  • Negatives Feelings of Déjà vu

Axiom Verge

★★★★★ 3.3
Verdict: Video game companies are constantly morphing and changing their franchises. They add new game play element, go from 2D to 3D, and more. Sometimes we gamers want to play something familiar. Sometimes we yearn for more games from a certain era.

Axiom Verge

★★★★★ 4.5
Verdict: Axiom Verge is one of those games that comes around once in a blue moon and reminds me why I love video games. It's easy to admire for the sole reason that the development team behind it is made up of one person.

Axiom Verge

★★★★★ 4.6
Verdict: In a generation bursting with neo-retro action games, Axiom Verge stands out as one of the best. This could have been a simple one-note love letter to the cartridge games of yesteryear, but instead it exceeds expectations and even manages to bring a few new ideas to the mix.

What's Old Is New

★★★★★ 4.6
Verdict: Metroid fans have been waiting in agony for a new 2D entry in the series since 2004's Zero Mission on Game Boy Advance. In the meantime, several fans have gone into development and created their own Metroid-style games.

PS4 Review - 'Axiom Verge'

★★★★★ 4.5
Verdict: Axiom Verge is a side-scrolling action/adventure that applies a fresh take on classic 8-bit games by using glitches as an important game mechanic.

Axiom Verge (PS4)

★★★★ 3.5
Verdict: Its inability to make me feel rewarded is really the core difference between Axiom Verge and the Metroid games it emulates so aggressively. On a moment-to-moment basis, exploring the alien hellscape of Axiom Verge can be awesome.

Axiom Verge (PS4) Review

★★★★★
Verdict: If you can put up with the meandering parts of Axiom Verge , it will quickly become your favorite game. A great combination of gameplay, story, and art and music direction make this one of the top games so far this year.

Best Metroid clone around. For 8-bit lovers who like a fun game.

★★★★★ 5.0
Verdict: This game is absolutely fantastic. A homage to 80's games like Metroid and it was made just by one person which is incredibly remarkable. If you like retro games with a challenge and good story this is the game for you, besides you would be supporting a lone developer and not a mainstream one.

Dont be fooled by the T rating

★★★★★ 5.0
Verdict: If you're worried about Axiom Verge's Teen rating, don't be. Just look at these graphics. Although the game impressed me, I gotta say: do you think this blood will be realistic No, and it's not. As for violence, I really think this is light violence. The ESRB is just getting a lot stricter.

Axiom Verge review – one-man Metroid army

★★★★ 3.5
Verdict: It spends too much time recreating the genius of Metroid rather than adding to it, but this is still one of the best examples of the genre in recent years.
Pros:
  • Extremely well designed game world, and very good graphics considering the lack of manpower
  • The Address Disruptor and other gadgets are great, as are the boss battles
Cons:
  • Only a few new ideas and a touch too similar to the real Metroid
  • Overbearing story adds little to the experience
  • Some minor control issues

Axiom Verge Review

★★★★★ 4.5
Verdict: As soon as a new indie game comes out, there are those voices that shout about how they are keeping the AAA titles from being made. That the latest Call Of Duty, or Assassin's Creed is somehow hampered by these small budget, one man developed games.

Axiom Verge review

★★★★ 4.0
Verdict: It's just a shame that given the obvious talent and passion involved, it doesn't really have much of its own to add to the Metroidvania template. As charmed and delighted as I often was with its smartly paced escalation, its perpetually teasing construction, I kept waiting for some new element to...

Great Collectors item for the indie fan

★★★★★ 5.0
Verdict: Loving the indie scene as of late. More of these titles are getting released physically an I'm thankful. This is a great game that captures retro titles. Feels very responsive and the exploration is gold. Love the extra art and documentary, really inspirational.

Axiom Verge (PS4)

★★★★★ 5.0
Verdict: I'm not sure that I'll actually go back and collect 100% of the items and seek out alternate endings, but that first playthrough is absolutely killer. I found myself scouring edges of the map in search of secrets and really had a fantastic time doing it.

Axiom Verge (PlayStation 4) Review

★★★★ 4.0
Verdict: It's hard to believe that it's been almost 30 years since Samus Aran first made an appearance in the enduringly popular Metroid series. The heavy emphasis on non-linear exploration, coupled with a compelling sci-fi setting has ensured that it's one of those franchises that Nintendo fans and critics...

Axiom Verge (PS4)

★★★★ 4.2
Verdict: Although they were a little over my head, I loved the action and exploration titles that were available on the original Nintendo when I was a child. Games such as Castlevania, Blaster Master, Metroid, and Rygar we the "epic" adventures that sucked me in while others got hooked into the RPG genre.

Axiom Verge Review: ‘Metroid Mania'

★★★★★ 4.5
Verdict: Axiom Verge marks a curious footnote in the ever-rotating cycle of video game development. In an age where huge 300-strong companies often squander vast amounts of investment on unnecessary frills and thrills, we've seen the consistent rise of the lowly independent team void of any contractual or...

Axiom Verge Review

★★★★★
Verdict: In 1987, Metroid fundamentally changed how side-scrolling games could be played. It was a literal game-changer and gave birth to a whole new genre. Though fans have frequently cried out for more Metroid and the style it perfected, there was a period when it nearly disappeared altogether, and it...

Sudra Calling - Axiom Verge Review

★★★★★ 4.5
Verdict: Axiom Verge is, at its core, a retro-style indie game. That term gets thrown around a lot, used to cover a wide variety of games that involve 8-bit music, pixelated graphics and challenging 2D combat and platforming.
Pros:
  • Brilliant ingenuity in world and map design
  • Surprisingly detailed lore and compelling story
  • Diverse arsenal of tools and weapons
  • Plenty of Metroid-esque exploration and hidden alcoves
Cons:
  • Searching for new areas can get cumbersome without warps
  • Sometimes difficult to differentiate platforms in complex areas
