Spectacular cans with a low barrier to entry, the ATH-AD900s are a great first step to high-end audio.

Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 Headphones Review

Audio-Technica's headphones are known to PC enthusiasts for the precision, positionality, and soundstage that these reproduce when used for gaming. Today, we will examine one of its pricier models.

Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 Headphones Review

If you are a gamer on a tight budget, the ATH-AD900 headphones are simply out of your price range. We would definitely recommend the less expensive ATH-AD700 headphones without question.

Audio-Technica ATH-AD900

I bought my pair on the used market, sold in the area by a very serious audio fan. I have waited one year of use to do this review. They were in perfect shape when bought and I got spoiled by the price, $80.00.

- Fair price; good build; not too heavy; the sound

- Sound stage can be altered if shifted too far on the ears

Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 Open Air Headphones

The AD900 were my first set of real cans. Frankly, I think they sound great. They are the most detailed pair of cans I own (also the most expensive, so people reading for truly high hi-falutin' audiophool reviews should go elsewhere, I'm all mid-fi).

Audio-Technica ATH-AD900

YOU'LL NEVER BE TEMPTED to take this headphone on the bus. The earpieces of Audio-Technica's ATH-AD900 are huge, measuring about 4.5 inches in diameter and concealing a big 53mm driver. Unlike almost all other headphones, the ATH-AD900 does not have an adjustable band.

Review: Audio-Technica ATH-AD900

When my wife runs off with the review gear before I even get a chance to check it out, I know it's gonna be something good. In this case, she saw the slick-looking Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 headphones , planted 'em on her dome, and never looked back.

Comfy like a La-Z-Boy, but much more lively; Large 53-mm drivers give a frequency response between 5 and 35,000 Hz; Lightweight, durable design; Ear fatigue not an issue

Bass-heads need not apply; Wearing these, don't be surprised if people peg you for a Trekkie

Very nice headphones, but...

The biggest thing people seem to knock these 'phones for is "lack of bass." I wouldn't say they have a lack of bass, the bass is just more balanced with the mids and can sometimes be drown out by the highs.

Beautiful, crisp highs, well defined mids, fairly large sound-stage; Great for listening to acoustic guitar, vocally driven music, or anything with precise instrumentation; Pretty good fit and finish.

They aren't as comfortable as they could be, that's where they loose one egg. They want to sit on my head (which is probably larger than most; I wear a 60cm hat for reference) in a position that doesn't provide optimal acoustics. I find myself adjusting them fairly often.

Great Headphone Value

I've owned many headphones over the years & at one point in my life, I sold audio gear. These headphones fit over the ear, are very comfortable and have a very open, transparent sound. The bass is detailed, without boom. The critical midrange frequencies are very accurate - voices sound natural.

The A-T AD900s are a wonderful headphone, especially for the price of ~$230. The lows are very detailed and not boomy at all, however, it doesn't extend terribly deep, though more than many, and the impact is pretty good. Mids are smooth yet detailed, and there aren't any dips or peaks.
