Acer's Tablet Is Fast and Stable, But Not All That Special

Acer's offering is plain vanilla-unspectacular but reliable. Hardware-wise, other than a jumbo 10.1-inch screen, it differs little from other high-end Android tablets: HDMI-out, front- and rear-facing cameras, and a drab exterior that doesn't offend but won't set design nerds' pulses racing.
Pros:
  • Priced aggressively for top-shelf hardware
  • As precise and dependable as a Swiss clock
Cons:
  • Tinny rear-facing speakers destroy music
  • Massive: Snapping pictures with this thing feels like shielding yourself with a cafeteria tray in a food fight

The screen is very responsive and Android 3 is a pleasure to use. Nvidia has added an app store for games, but Acer's bundled apps are a little uninspiring. SocialJogger brings Facebook and Twitter feeds together, and Photo Browser 3D lets you flick through images using the tablet's motion sensors.

Acer ICONIA Tab A500 Android Tablet

We had a brief hands-on with Acer's ICONIA Tab A500 back in May, when they announced it in India. We returned from the conference quite pleased with what we saw. Finally! A worthy competitor to the almighty iPad – we thought.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 in-depth review -

Tablets, we know, are the future. They may not do everything a laptop can, but their great video playback and gaming capabilities plus thousands of apps make them highly appealing. This is the second tablet to run Android's fully-fledged tablet OS, Honeycomb, following Motorola's Xoom earlier in the...
Pros:
  • Decent styling
  • fast processor
Cons:
  • Heavy
  • Honeycomb not to all tastes
  • battery life not the best

Acer Iconia Tab A500 and A501

Conclusion The Acer Iconia Tab A500 has a lot going for it, most notably the relatively low price to feature ratio. Acer has made an attractive tablet that doesn't look the least bit cheap, and the features are largely on par with tier 1 brands like Motorola, Samsung and LG.
Pros:
  • Con: Our unit turned itself on every minute or so
  • can't play 1080p video
  • unused slot is covered only by tape
Cons:
  • Price: $449 for the A500 WiFi-only model
  • $329 with AT&T contract, $479 without contract for AT&T A501 model

Acer Iconia Tab A500 review

Acer has taken a different approach from most manufacturers to tablets. Instead of putting all it's money behind one operating system like LG, Samsung and Motorola, it has created two tablets lines within its Iconia range.

Good beginner use tablet

the weight was a lot lighter than I had expected. Compared to many other tablets that I tested out, this is one of the lightest ones I have used. The apps are plentiful and vary from business ones to reward one to even casual games like angry birds.
