Acer Aspire S7 Review: This Is How Windows 8 Should Feel…Almost

We've been playing with Windows 8 for a while now - but not yet on a machine designed from the start to run on the new OS. Next week, when Acer's Aspire S7 ultrabook launches, all that will change. Is this 11-inch wisp of a laptop a worthy debut for Windows 8?

The Ultimate Ultrabook

I have been using this Ultrabook for just over 24 hours and I think that I have at last found the ultimate portable computer. It looks incredible and is at last a Windows PC that can be placed next to the MacBook range of computers and not be found wanting on looks or performance, the Acer Logo on...

Acer Aspire S7 (13.3 inch)

The 13.3-inch version of Acer's Aspire S7 laptop is gorgeous. There are a few minor niggles, it's expensive and battery life isn't the best, but despite all this, this is one of the better Windows 8 solutions out there at this point in time. Let's hope Acer finds a way to bring the cost down.
Pros:
  • Beautiful design
  • Monitor increases resistance as you open it further
  • minimising screen wobble from touching
  • Full HD IPS screen
  • Dual SSDs in RAID 0 bring plenty of speed
Cons:
  • Expensive
  • Battery life could be better
  • Backlit keyboard makes the keys harder to read in half-light
  • Can get loud under load

Acer Aspire S7-391-9886

Though the Acer Aspire S7-391-9886 is a very good choice for the "money is no object" buyer, some quirks and a brief battery life keep this ultrabook from earning our highest honors.

Acer Aspire S7-391-9886

The Acer Aspire S7-391-9886 ($1,649.99 list) is one of the thinnest ultrabooks we've reviewed, especially given its touch screen. It comes with a quicker Core i7 processor than the run-of-the-mill ultrabook, and its SSD drives with RAID 0 striping make it a speed demon at multimedia tasks.
Cons:
  • Mediocre battery life
  • Limited ports, requires dongles for VGA and Ethernet
  • Integrated graphics
  • Persistent cooling fans in high performance mode.

Microsoft and hardware partner Acer are hoping to usher in a brave new world of touch-control Windows computing. An interesting part of that strategy is the touch-screen laptop, and the Acer Aspire S7-391 is the first such machine we've seen in production form.

Acer Aspire S7-391 review

All in all, the S7-391 is a nice laptop to use and show off. It would be nice to have an 8GB option and better battery life, but neither is essential for the vast majority of users. The design and overall usability are top notch.
