DeWalt is a brand of power tools and hand tools popular in a variety of industries, including woodworking, construction, and manufacturing. Today the
company is a subsidiary of Stanley Black & Decker. The company has been in existence for more than 90 years, and though they've gone through a number
of changes since founding, they still have many of the same ideals and values.
The Founding of DeWalt
Raymone E. DeWalt founded the company in 1936. Many know the name as the man who invented the radial arm saw. The company was popular from the beginning,
and they grew very quickly. By 1947, they were making radial arm saws as well as a variety of other stationary woodworking machines. The company actually
sold to American Machine & Foundry Co. Inc. in 1949. They held onto the company for another eleven years, and at that time, it sold to Black &
DeWalt Over the Years
The company continues to sell well, and they continue to create a number of new products. In 1989, Black & Decker actually sold off the company's
radial arm saw branch. While that may have been the device that put DeWalt on the map in the beginning, they no longer needed it. The company continued to
In 1992, Black & Decker decided that they wanted to re-brand DeWalt and themselves, and they wanted to turn DeWalt into their high-end subsidiary. Over
the years, they have become one of the most popular brands of tools among professional contractors. This proved to be a very smart move, and today, they've
grown enough that they are offering more than 200 different types of hand power tools, not to mention more than 800 different accessories. In 1994, they
took over a company called ELU. This was a German company that created woodworking tools. DeWalt added the company's technology and tools to their own
Up until 2002, the company had manufacturing facilities in the United States. However, they moved their facilities to Mexico and China at that time in an
effort to reduce their operating costs. Another acquisition brought even more diversity to DeWalt. Black & Decker bought a company called Porter Cable,
one of their rivals, and added it to DeWalt.
One of the recent innovative products to come from the company is their lithium ion cordless drills. The drills themselves are high quality and they have a
battery pack that will actually work with 40 of the other tools they have in their line. This makes charging and using the devices faster and easier since
the batteries are interchangeable. It can also cut down on the number of batteries, as well as cord clutter. Both of these things are popular with
professional carpenters and contractors, as well as with amateurs who are simply buying the tools for home usage.
They continue to make more types of tools - power tools and hand tools - and they continue to impress. The company has had its hand in a number of other
fields as well. For example, they were a sponsor for NASCAR. They sponsored driver Matt Kenseth for ten years, from 1999 to 2009. The company was happy
with the driver's performance, as he won 18 races. However, they did not renew their partnership after 2009 because there were issues with the construction
industry. This was around the time of the most recent economic collapse. With fewer construction jobs, it meant fewer people were buying DeWalt products,
and they had to cut back somewhere. Even though sponsoring in NASCAR was good publicity, the expenditure was one they could not afford to continue.
Instead, they spent the 2010 racing season sponsoring a MotoGP rider. In 2011, DeWalt decided that it would once again be able to enter the racing field as
a sponsor and sponsored Marcos Ambrose.
The brand has always had a very good reputation among those who know and use tools on just about every level. They create quality tools and a wide range of
different tools. The tools are available in a variety of different stores as well as online, and they continue to be innovators in the field of tools.
